TOI and tip hardness

i've been using the TOI for over a month with great results. when i started out, i was using the kamui black SS and loved it. for some reason:rolleyes:, when that tip wore down, i decided to replace it with an Ultraskin Medium. the deflection is now much higher and i hate it. i've had to totally recalibrate my shot. the USMed is very hard.

so, i'm going back to the KBSS asap. just fyi for anyone out there using the TOI, the tip hardness makes a difference. not saying one is better than the other, but very, very different. might as well have switched shafts. its just what you are used to.

i use an OBCPro. the KBSS is an awesome tip and i'll never stray again. worth every penny.

You're saying that the harder tip produced more squirt, right?

From Dr. Dave's website:

"Return of the squirt robot" (BD, August, 2008) documents some experiments related to the effects of tip hardness on squirt. A softer tip did seem to create slightly more squirt, but the experiments were not very well controlled (see the article for more info). Weight differences would definitely have an effect. If a tip is heavier, it will certainly create more endmass and squirt."

Could it be that your harder tip was heavier?

The softer tips make the cue ball feel like it's made out of "rubber".

I prefer a harder tip myself and just had the same experience. The softer tips make the cue ball feel like it's made out of "rubber". I like to feel the cue ball and if the hit is dampened I can't seem to get connected to the Game.

yes, the harder tip produced more squirt. i was overcutting everything with the same amount TOI. i had it dialed in with the KBSS. the weight for sure could be a factor if there was a difference.

to cj's point about the soft vs hard tip, i actually like the rubbery feel. i shoot the balls pretty firm 90% of the time. the softer tip seems to be a good match for my stroke and also the TOI. i can hit the balls with a crisp stroke and the soft tip and the TOI keeps it under total control floating the cue ball around the table. with the harder tip, i had less control of the cue ball and couldn't stun any shots.

also, that OBCPro shaft already hits very hard, so the harder tip made it feel like a wrecking ball hitting the cue ball. so there are many factors here to consider but the tip made a huge difference.

Hi CJ,

Probably one of the main reason, I like your TOI system. I play with a custom layer tips that I had made for myself and now I'm marketing them under the name CM360 fearless tip. My tip has a Hard hitting style but yet has the property of a soft in how it grab the cue ball and hold chalk and it shape consistently. Just love the way this tip plays and I think they complement the TOI system very nicely. The bound/elasticity on my tip make the shaft move livelier...like it add more power to the shaft. I tried other layer tips where it seem like when you draw the ball or hit harder that not all of your stroke power is transferred making it feel like you didn't hit the sweet spot. I just love the feel and sound of the tip and cue ball connecting...give you a feeling that you nail the shot right.

Put one of my tip on Earl shaft and I'm looking forward to his feedback. If you want to try one let me know and I'll send a few your way for testing.

Also, thanks on the drill for safety plays...really appreciate it!!

A harder tip definitely makes more deflection. Just went from soft to triangle and am loving it for toi.
Duc, can you post a thread or pm me on the safty drill CJ posted. Thanks

those drills are in post 5 or 6 i think. good drills.

i just got used to the soft tip. with that and the LD shaft i start center to center then move to slightly under cut the ball then use TOI. it works perfectly. just starting center to center or CTE on every long shot has helped me alot.

I'll be glad to share any of them with anyone that's having a specific issue

You're welcome, when you practice that safety drill for a few days you'll see a noticeable difference in your control. Many of the "shortcuts' in pool are knowing the most effective thing to practice for isolated skill development.

I have a lot of custom drills I've developed over the years for when I'm training for a particular match. I'll be glad to share any of them with anyone that's having a specific issue with their game. 'The Game is the Teacher'
