That's right, Mike, usually you're applying spin to "stun" the ball slightly or really change the angle off the rail. Hitting the TOI with a low "stun" is much better than "slow rolling" the ball, it holds it's line better and isn't at the mercy of the table or "the skid".
As you know there's a lot of positive things about using this TOI shot and what I personally like is the "Touch" it gives me. I don't get that same feeling from using outside or center, do you?
After working with TOI, I hit soft shots with it, too. I use an accelerating stroke and still hit them without too much speed. I've found a push instead of a pull works best.
