A well-deserved congratulations to Alex. I know he is enjoying this win, after he experienced a huge disappointment finishing second in a few previous big events.

Look out world and hear the roar of Alex the Lion. It's good to see him on top!

All right, I'll take a shot, but only guessing.

The Chinese word for "cat" is "mao," and it is pronounced almost exactly the same as "Mao," as in Chairman Mao Tse-Tung.

Alex the Lion a/k/a Mao, may look like a cat, but can roar like a lion on the pool table.

Just guessing as well. I think the nickname was taken from that notorious Russian roulette scene in the movie "Deer Hunter". 'Though rooting for Efren, good final roar Mr. Alex the lion! Congratulations!

I want to congratulate my friend Alex on beating the best in Tokyo. I heard The Lion roaring all the way over here in D.C.

I am glad to see him win a BIG one, and this is only the first of many more to come. He's got a bright future.

I can see him smiling now. Congratulations, Alex, on a job well done.

Mao looks more chinese than filipino. That's why he got "Mao". This was his pre-Canada days.

FYI, until recently, Alex was rated equal to the following Filipinos: Alcano, Gabica, Lining, Kiamco, Gallego, Orcullo, Luat, Andam, and Corteza, and Manalo. Alex's international exposure has pushed him a notch higher than his peers.

Gabica is a tough cookie too. He has one of the smoothest strokes (with Andam) among the pinoys.

I think it was Edgar Acaba whom Blackjack played in Manila.

I don't think Gabica has. He was with Bustamante in Germany for a few years and did win the Munich Open once.

When Efren was interviewed few years back, he was questioned " How many more like you in Manila?" I think he answered 32 more. Now I know he wasn't kidding. Many are unknown in America but can play world class.

I think he was German Open Champion in 98. A year before that he played the finals with Django also in the German Open but lost. His most recent wins are the JBC Tokyo Open 2002 and 2003 --- Champion on both occassions. The recent wins in JBC were hardly news here so I guess other news agencies did not pick it up --- maybe also because all the press releases were in Japanese (?). In fact, the Tokyo 9 was not really picked up as news (in the Philippines, though I may be wrong - but where are the newspapers carrying the news?)... thank God for the internet. ;)

It was Edgar Acaba. I was playing Edgar and knocking two and three balls in off the snap - consistently - and getting out. I was approaching the hill at a rapid pace, having won another game. I looked for my break cue and it had disappeared. I do not believe that Edgar had ANYTHING to do with it, but some that had laid money on the outcome obviously did. When the match was over, my break cue magically returned to where I had left it. Edgar is a great player and probably didn't need the extra help, but then again, thats what I get for showing up without my own cheering section.

Hi Blackjack. Even if I wasn't a Filipino, I think I would laugh while reading your post. It's a good thing it didn't happen in the Philippines! I bet in hindsight, you also laugh at the ridiculous incident. But that really was an awful experience, and is worthy of an excusable loss.

Edgar Acaba stands his own ground. He operates alone and prepares for tournaments. This guy is a fighter. I remember him snatching the Rising Stars championship from Alcano after Alcano raised his cue in victory when he still had a few balls left for the title - and made a horrible miss. Edgar drilled all the balls in after good breaks to win the title.
