tone and density in wood

thank you

Thank you all for your opinions. I dont mean to ruffle any feathers. I am just a guy who loves pool and found it later rather than sooner in life. I would think that there are many people out there like myself who are trying to increase their knowledge of tge cue making process. I appreciate the cuemakers who take the time to help the public....even if its filled with anger and sarcasm.

Now im really confused after reading all of this. So much for relying on the expertise of reputable cue dealers and legendary cue makers. I guess ill take the two grand i had saved up and buy a new set of golf clubs since according to the logic i have read, the mali i bought back in 1989 should hit just as well as the 1500.00 custom cue that came from those crazy california people...

Me and my big mouth! :)

Martin (prefers relatively higher tone to thuddy woods all day long)

Huh Huh, yep, OK, right, yeah, sure. The more I sit and read this garbage the more bewildered I become and can understand why people leave here confused. You have some who purchase shafts based on his ability to hear tonal differences but when I am willing to wager that he can't, there are no takers. Now we have someone who can pick Davis blanks (who everyone agrees are great blanks) based on his hearing ability and states that he preferes high pitched wood to thuddy wood. WOW - I wonder what Davis does with all his "thuddy" blanks.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Joe,

Of corse your right but I have an observation to make with some providence to back up your observations and point of view.

Each cue or shaft set up is unique to itself. When a cue maker builds a cue he can not nor will he ever have total control of this area. He can use his experience to this end but the out come varies like the amount of husbands that Liz Taylor had.

My friend was a millwright who worked in Bert Schrager's shop for many years in North Hollywood. When he first started he was part time for a few years. On his millwright job they had an oscilloscope that measured the frequency of A-10 mill spec cold roll steel rods for a critical project where frequency had to me matched to a sympathetic oscillation created by the machines rpm and density..

Bert gave Stew a box containing 40 shafts and a bunch of cut forearms to hook up to the machine. When they did the mill spec cold roll show a variation that was 3% from the batch and the profile was almost identical on these units. Mill spec steel conforms to a very high standard and ladle dip testing is performed at the foundry for holding a standard.

When he did the shafts at the same parked dimensions they were all over the place with none that were even close to the same profile on the scope. The exotics of the same species did not come close to comparing unless they were cut from the same piece which they were smart enough to have as a control in their little test.

So every time a cue is built it is subject to random odds concerning density, vibration, and so called feedback and each cue is unique. Any ring tone guy is "California Dreaming" and is just blowing smoke and actually thinks he understands or controls the outcome. Not.

IMO, Other than you visual inspection the best test you can do concerning a shaft is to weigh it and understand it's density.

JMO,

Rick

Thank you all for your input. Im putting my money in oil futures and cashing them in next march. For those that attend the SBE, i will visit your booth. I will pick my cuemaker based on who is the coolest and tolerates my ignorance while i buy u beer. I will then have the cuemaker pick out their favorites out of the bunch and call it a day.

I will say that martin is in the lead cuz he rocks.....
