Tony/Skyler trivia question

Understandable 👍 The tournament directors need to ban those players...if they have the balls. A lot of times they're friends with the TDs though
I would love for this to happen. I entered a tournament a few weeks ago and was speaking to the TD a little before the tournament began.

I said "hey I see you have a big tournament coming up in a few weeks, and I would love to play, but it says they require a robustness of 200 and higher. I've been playing in this weekly tournament for weeks now so can you vouch for me? You know I am not trying to hide my skill level or anything, I am just trying to get my robustness up and I'm an honest player".

They said "no I can't put my neck on the line like that"

They then proceeded to let their friend enter the weekly tournament and he has NO fargorate whatsoever, 0. They started him at 400. He ended up beating me twice.

Pure hypocrisy. A few weeks later, he is rated way higher than a 400.

Have you experienced something similar? @Ģüśţāṿ

Yep, friends always get to steal.

You forgot this match at the 2019 Derby City Classic One Pocket. Tony won. So that's 11-0. ...
That might have been before One-Pocket games were included in FargoRate (I forget when that started). And, regardless, Mike might not have had access to DCC match scores then (rather than just who won the match), other than from a few streamed matches like that one.

I have a newbie question Mike: How to obtain a FR if you never had one and there are no fargo reported tournaments near me, and the ones that within reasonable distance require 200+ robustness?

You can use the salatto app to play one on one rated games. (Or at least you used to be able to)

Most TD's will let you play in a tournament, and they can estimate your skill level for that single event (it won't affect your fargorate, or be a fargorate starter rating, it only is a number for THAT bracket). Then, you can at least play and build robustness. They will probably err on the high side, unless they personally know you. If they still give you a hard time, you can say something like "make me the same as the highest player". I can't imagine they'd say no to that.

Put this on facebook; let's see where the right answer shows up first.

Pure trivia question from the FargoRate database

There are 10 recorded matches between Tony Chohan and Skyler Woodward (7 one-pocket, 3 rotation).

Question: How many of these did Tony win?

Bonus: If Tony had any wins, how many were one-pocket vs rotation?

Curious to see the guesses.
I think Tonys ratio of winning more 9 Ball Games than Sky winning more one pocket games is my bet.

Have em play ten of each.
Here's my prediction....
Score 9 Ball.... Sky gets six outta ten games.
One pocket Sky.... gets 3 outta ten games.

Yes, both. That was before we were including one pocket games and game scores were generally unavailable. Still, that we're now at 11-0 for matches we're aware of is pretty striking.

Incidentally, we would only input score for a streamed match if either we decided in advance the score would go in or we had access (perhaps from someone like you) to scores for all streamed matches for an event. Otherwise there is a selection bias. People in general only alert us to their score for something that's not in if they think it will boost their rating.

Join a league to keep your fargorate low and robustness high. It's the worst kept secret right now. That's what everyone and their mother is doing in my state. That way you can enter tournaments that are Fargo-capped and proceed to "rob" the field. It's the modern way of sandbagging.
I don't want to deal with league and all the dramas, I understand Fargo and their business model, at the end of day it's a business to make profit, but I prefer a different way if I can, maybe keep looking for FR tournaments, I may get lucky and find some close enough once every year 🤣

I can't find any tournaments, as most players hate fargo reported tournament lmao. I don't mind that at all, get an idea of my speed through different sources and add 50 (maybe even 100) to my Fargo just to be safe first time, I'll feel more pressure and play better anyway, screw all of that sandbagging BS, I know I'll be 700 some day, if I start practicing, just a matter of time 😁

Where is near you?

Enter Open events or play in the highest division available in tournaments until you get established.

Your attempt to assign motivation here makes the same mistake that shows up in many responses (both here and on Facebook) to the original question.

In the Tony/Sky case, the fact that we’re asking the question is itself evidence. If the data were typical or aligned with baseline expectations, there would be no question. Answering as if it were asked at random ignores that conditioning. (Some of you—like sixpack and skogstokig—are getting this.)

The same applies to FargoRate’s choices. The fact that we don’t split 7-ft and 9-ft ratings is itself evidence. If our goal were, as you suggest, short-term engagement or revenue, splitting them would be the obvious, economically superior move. We would get far more engagement by giving people what they think they want. The fact that we don’t do that is important evidence of something.

In both cases, the error is the same: ignoring the selection mechanism that produced the question and the policy, and treating highly informative behavior as if it carried no information at all.
Spoiled it too soon
