Tony Zinzola - Cue Review

First of all, I wanted to say that I’ve been Tony’s biggest critic – or one of, at least… I’ve not been shy to voice my opinion about what I deem as quality or lack thereof. I have never held a Zinzola cue in my hands, only judged from what I’ve seen in pictures online, as there is nobody in the PNW that has one of his cues.

A while back I was getting quite a bit of pressure from what I believed to be Mr. Zinzola’s “crew” for all of my negative opinions. I guess I felt that in order to accurately give an honest review, I should probably just pick up the phone and order one…. Only I couldn’t find his number. I went to Tony’s website and found his “contact us” form and filled it out. I got a phone call from Tony within probably 10 minutes of hitting send. The funny thing is little did I know that Tony was on the phone with Mike Webb when he received my email and I guess Tony thought I really was an asshole, until Mike let him know that I was a really good guy… (thanks Mike).

Tony and I spoke on the phone for the better part of an hour that day. He asked what my preferences were, in terms of style, weight, playability, etc. For anyone that feels this is a biased review – I paid for this cue in full. Anyways, so after the phone call, from that point on, I have to honestly say that I have never – ever - worked with any cuemaker that was as openly communicative as Tony has been throughout this entire process. All emails were responded to within hours, if not immediately. The build time was accurately quoted. Actually, it would’ve been accurately quoted had his wife not given birth, but it’ll be a week or so late…. I can understand that. Just this once. I literally got an email at midnight on a Tuesday night saying, “I’m not going to be able to ship your cue tomorrow like planned, I’m taking my wife to the hospital. I’ll let you know tomorrow.” – If that’s not dedication, then I don’t know what is…..

So as you all know, this is as of earlier this month. The day before he told me he was going to mail it to me, I hit him with another request – joint protectors…. I received a very prompt response with several four letter words, as Tony does not like to make them at all. He was nice enough to tell me yes and to add another week or so to delivery (which proved to be a few weeks).

My cue:

This cue is still in Tony's possession until tomorrow. I should have it by the end of this week and plan to play with it for many hours and will then update the thread with the most important part - playability.

I just wanted to share my experiences to date and thought I'd throw this out here now.....

Ross,
You should have known that most Tony's are all cool people
Great work Mr. Zinzola!

Just for the record, I never said you were an asshole. I did ask Mike if I should bother calling you though.

Now, after building the cue for you, I'm happy to report that you are an asshole, but that's ok. So am I.

I'm happy with the way the cue came out and I hope you like it. I look forward to getting punched dead in the mouth by you at Valley Forge next year.

If you sell that cue to *****, I'll literally punch you dead in the mouth upon meeting you.

Nice Cue and I hope you like the way it plays, I like all my Zinzolas.
Tony, if you read this, think on your Oversea Buddy, not more then 2 Weeks:eek::grin:

Great looking cue, Ross. Tony's new sig rings are just the nuts. The coloration in this cue is spot on, up & down. And it's a SS piloted joint - good man!!

Great looking cue.Tony is a stand up guy.I am expecting my cue this Friday and will post some more pics. Its the pink ivory cue.I know this cue is going to be the nuts.

i agree that tony's communication and service is perfect. tony and i have exchanged hundreds of emails and his replys were always prompt. he usually responds within 10 minutes. as for the cue, everything was done pretty much right on schedule but there was a problem out of our control which delayed things by a bit. but even when there was a problem tony always let me know pretty quickly so there were no surprises. i should have both of mine by the end of the week too and i'll add to the review once i log some practice time with it.

The situation out of our control was that Martyne Bachman had the cue. We just got it back a month or so ago, but we were waiting to ship both cues together.

I get my emails on my Blackberry, so I always try to respond quick. The cues aren't always done on time, but I don't dodge anybody. I have a few customers who have been more than patient and I'm quite a bit behind with them, but I always do my best to keep them updated. Sometimes I'm a bit slow in sending out pictures or initiating the contact, but anybody that sends me an email or calls me will get a reply rather quickly.

Thanks again for building this cue. I look forward to getting it and will update this thread after logging some hours on it....

As everyone has always said on this website - communication is key.

Great looking cue Ross. I like the bumperless/ Hoppe style.
Great work Mr. Zinzola

Due to my unfortunate work schedule, I need to be out of town the remainder of this week... hopefully I'll take delivery by Saturday and get this thread updated.

I spoke to Tony today for the first time. He is a great guy. I like his bumperless cues. Ross and I are on the same sheet of music on that-there is a long thread in a different forum avbout the "correct" way to do a Hoppie ring. When I saw the pics of this cue in the OP, I said "I think I need one", I didnt know it was Ross's cue, I did think of him when I saw it as it is what he likes and what I like(thats not bullshit I really did). So I ordered one today. I have zero business ordering cues since I havent made $$$ in 17 months, but I never said I was smart.

I'm looking foward to it for sure, Congrats to you Ross. I like how you roll buddy.

Hi Eric, you will like Tony's Cues as I like all mine.
Long time not hear from you (hagar:eek:)
Ralf:grin:

Hey, Eric. Tony is really great to work with. He's coming down the home stretch on one for me now. Looking forward to it. Doing something different in the butt end - something he hasn't done before...
Also a piloted SS joint, Ross. (...and we kept the butt cap under the Hoppe ring short...)
