Too Much Weight?

 I am an average player. I can string 4 0r 5 together at times. But I like to gamble.

The other day I was playing with a guy who more than one has told me is the best in the city. We played two sets for 50, I had the six out and won.

We played the next day and I had the 6 and 8 and he won his money back.

The third time we played he gave me the 6 and eight and I lost two sets, he gave me the 6 and 8 and breaks and I lost two more. So then I got him to give the call 6 out and I won my money back.

THen he got pissed cause "I had too much weight" and said he's not going to spot me any more. Basically saying he didn't want to play me any more.

I know this is huge weight. Almost laughable. I know he doesn't have to give me anything. But my question is why get all mad because he gave me too much? He quit when I got even Its not like I took his money.

Should I not play for cash untill I can hang even with the top guns? Cause that could be never. Should I not ask for a game that I think I have a chance to win so I can feel like a man?

What do you think? Please don't rip me for asking for a ridiculous spot, i know already. I just don't think he should get mad and quit because he gave it to me.

ps. I guess this guy was 5 or 6 in the nation as a junior.

Are we talking 4 or 5 balls, or 4 or 5 RACKS?

Because if we are talking 4 or 5 balls, then you would be best served not gambling at all with much better players, as you will at best break even, and at worst, lose multiple sets to hustler types that bait you to keep gambling by adjusting the spot.

If you mean 4 or 5 racks, I am really surprised you would not be more comfortable with the gambling subculture by now.

I would not consider 4-5 racks an avg player, I would think that would be above average. 4-5 balls may be closer to average, but maybe a little bit below.

balls

balls not racks. I can run a rack every once in a while, but normally 4 or five balls is where i end up. Hopefully they are last 4 or 5 and not the first.

We play on 9' Diamonds which makes it a bit tougher to get out.

good game makers and nits

When you make good games you are a smart handicapper. When the other person makes a game that they can win they are a nit. The guy is just annoyed that he gave a game he couldn't win at. You would be foolish to stay with a game that you had no chance of winning at.

I have to say that I miss the hell out of the days of just making a bet head's up and letting the fur fly but it seems that the negotiating takes more time than the play on the tables now. If you don't have the skills on the pool table your two options are to bet small and take your lumps while you are learning knowing that you will rake in all of this and more down the road or to make games that you have at least a decent chance of winning. The choice is yours. It will be very hard to get a game with many people if you are looking for a lock every time though. My suggestion: Bet as small as you can when you don't really like the game, bet large when you like the game but get in action all you can.

PS: I think this was your first post. Welcome!

I'm curious: Who is the guy?

Anyway, the guy just doesn't have the heart for that game. Don't bother gambling with him if it causes you so much concern. There are other games out there.

Hu, thanks for the welcome.

I just thought it was weird that he didn't try to readjust, and just got pissed and quit.

It seems that nobody wants to play cheap like you suggest. THat would be my preference. Nobody who really knows how to play wants to play for less than $50. Thats not cheap if Im donating.

I would prefer not to say who the guy was. Hes a big name around town but doesn't travel much anymore I guess.
