I was wondering if anyone knows where to purchase some cutting tools used on the Porper Model B Lathe. I'm looking for the one cutting tool that cuts right to left, as I'm trimming a new ferrule to match the shaft. I am hoping to find a stock number and a place to purchase these, as Joe wants $40.00 a piece. I'm not in this to make a living, it's just a hobby for me. I would be very happy if anyone can supply me with any vendor that carries any of the other tooling for this lathe, or if anyone has any parts of their own for sale, I might be interested. You can e-mail me at....dukesqstopinpa@aol.com...if you want to send it to me that way..I also have a shaftmaster never used if anyone would be interested. Thanks.........

You can call these people

but if it is a standard bit you should be able to get it local. You can also buy HS steel bits and grind them yourself any way you want. Just the right grind can make or break a job when cutting, it is a good thing to learn how to do. I almost never use carbide to cut wood. I like HS steel It just takes a second to touch it up and it is sharp as a razor again.
I just took a look at the Porper site and it looks like a common tool holder, you should be able to get the cutter bits. Check out this website you fill find usefull information there I know there will be some on tool grinding.

Thanks all you guys for the suggestions you have provided, I'm also thing Enco might have them too, I just didn't want to spend $40.00 a piece for them because this is just a hobby for me. If anyone out there has any types lathe supplies that they want to sell, you can send it to me by pm if you want, Thanks again..Duker

I really think the best advice you got was to do a little reading and buy some high speed steel blanks. My best cutters were the ones I made for the job I was doing. Aside from anything else when you are trying to finish a project at two in the morning and need a cutter you can make it and get on with the project instead of ordering it and waiting and waiting and waiting to complete that last little bit of a job.

One more last thing I would like to know is, what different people use for collets on a 3 or 6 jaw chuck to keep the wood from being marked. The only collets I have are the ones that came with the lathe, but I would like to have more, probably making them myself, I am also in the process of extending the left side out the back of the lathe so I can do 1 piece bar cues without the whole lathe from vibrating. Most of the 1 piece cues I get to repair comes from bars that must have had them forever. I think I might be able to get by using different size bearings to hold the butt of the cue. I want to thank all you guys that offered opinions on these questions about parts and so forth for my lathe...........

For bushings/collets, either Delrin (Acetal), Nylon or UHMW polyethylene will work.

Thanks,

Jon
