Tournament administration fees

This question pertains to a person who runs an 8 ball tournament in a tavern and charges $1.00 per person. The tavern matches the total buy ins ($5.00 each). This person also plays in these tournaments and to me it seems to be a problem. He can win money without it costing him anything out of his pocket. He could show up totally broke and enter the tourny with money from his fees. Seems a bit fishy to me. Am I just being a nit? lol

I used to run a poker game in my basement, provided snacks and sodas. I removed $1 out of each ante. I also played in the game.

On the one hand, I'm lessening the total amount of money that is being gambled collectively, especially if the game lasts all night, but on the other hand, I definitely was winner each and every time at the end.

I understand the dilemma from both sides.

I've played many home games and ususally there is a fee to walk in the door or hourly rate to cover the extras with nothing taken out of the pot.

Welcome to the world of bar pool competition. If the TD's efforts don't interfere with play seems ok. Every bar has their own thing going on, and it's what it is in your neck of the woods. If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

Never asked if a TD at Metro Sports, or the Northern Lounge was paid in one place the Owner Ran Tournament,in the other it was employee. Did not care, one place had a Green Fee, the other it wasSplitting Quarters into Bar Box.

I have heard were TD get Tipped by Winner of Tournament. See no reason to TIP TD, as what they did was a job, normal job, nothing special. They did not stop fight, subdue a gunman, or?

Have a friend who recently retired from FireService after 39 years, I asked him if his Department did HERO AWARDS? Answer was no, he replied that is our job. running into Danger, Saving Lives. He was Firefighter of Year once, got a 8-/1/2 x 11 Piece of Paper Stating so, no free Lunch, Special Watch, day Off, just piece of paper.

I have no issue with him getting paid or playing in the tourney. It's a weekly bar tournament for $5. Getting someone to agree to run the tournament with all of the contrasting personalities is tough. I used to run bar tournaments back in the day and the bar paid for my entry.

This depends on the size of the game/blinds. Playing $1/2, you are still raking a pretty good amount off the table. Since it's a home game, we can assume probably 15-20 hands per hour if playing on a full table. If you are taking around $100 off the table every night for some chips and salsa, I'd be skipping this game.

It was $1 ante. I have a pool table by my poker table in the basement. All of us are good buddies from the pool room. If somebody went all-in or got knocked out, they could engage in a game of stakes on the pool table. Cars would be parked outside my house all night long. It was fun. But soon some of my buddies gambled away their rent money, cab rent money, et cetera, and we started playing a different format, 100 chips for $10, pot limit. We could play multiple poker tournaments every night and nobody got hurt. In those tournaments, I didn't get the free ante or remove $1 from the pot.

There was only one time when somebody, a friend of a friend, objected to me playing AND getting free ante. Instead of removing the $1 from the pot, I'd play most nights and get that free ante. It was the nuts!

Here's a photo from the good old days. We all had pool names. From left to right, Tom-Tom aka Tom Wirth, author of "One Pocket: A Game of Controlled Aggression," Bowie, Rudd the Roofer, Baby Huey, and Cap Driver Pete. In this photo, it looks like Tom-Tom and Cab Driver Pete are in a standoff.

That's awesome.

We had two weekly home games. One at my place, and one at my buddy's place. We would charge everyone $5-10 for the food and drinks that the host provided for the evening. If someone brought food for the group, that person was paid. Since we were all friends, I didn't like the idea of raking the game. Sometimes we played $2/5, but most nights were open (dealer call it) poker for 25c for a couple of hours followed by a NL tourney for anywhere between $20 and $100 depending on who showed up.

I've played in a lot of tourneys, both pool and foosball. I've run and assisted running many of both. Not only should the td get something for his efforts, if you win, you should tip him.

I've only been at a small tourney one time where the td didn't play in the tourney, that was me running a tourney I didn't expect to run. I was one of only two people this bar would allow to run a tourney and the normal td didn't show up. We had a full bracket, so I sat.

There is no conflict of interest if things are done properly. The td has an interest in making the tourney successful, which means keeping it fair and keeping players happy. The stress of running a tourney probably interfers with most players abilities.

Yes you are a nut, full stop.

Yeah, if he’s playing in it, he really shouldn’t be charging, but it is only $1 per person. If he’s one of the better players and winning more than his share, then that would bother me a little more.

Bottom line though, somebody has to commit to being there to run the tournament, which is worth something, unless he’s an employee and is also getting paid for his time.
