Tournament Advice

Ok, I normally ask my advice directly by PM, this time, however, I am going to see what some of the big boys (and ladies) do in preparation for a major tournament. At the end of August I will be playing in possibly the largest singles event, well, most significant anyway, of my life. I am playing in the Canadian 9 Ball Open. I will be facing the top players in Canada and the top two spots get entry into the Worlds.

He is the 411 on me. I am a AAA/Semi-pro and have had about 10 to 15 pro events under my belt. My best finish to date in a pro event was 5/6. I have played many of the players I will be facing at the Canadians already and somewhat know what to expect as per their level of play.

My real question is what do you do differently to get your mind and game ready for a major event?

Thanks in advance.

While I don't consider myself one of the big boys, I can assure you that getting LOTS of rest and LOTS of cardiovasuclar work outs will help your game in ways that nothing else will, especially in long tournaments & under heavy pressure. The rest and exercise (not body-building) can't be emphasized enough IMHO. You could throw in diet for good measure. Eat well, eat light, eat often.

Good shooting. Keep us posted on your results.

Listen to JoeyA and drink alot of fluids weeks before the event.....SPF=randyg

Well, I might have a question that perhaps might pertain to this post.

I know that there are some 14.1 psychos out there (lol, I shouldn't quite say psychos but you see what I mean :p ) who play Straight pool from sun up till sun down; even if they're playing for money or not.

My quesiton comes down to this: How can one play with so much endurance without having so much fatigue? (and sort of relate this to "The Hustler" where Fatty just plays Fast Eddie for a very long time) What exercise routine do yall follow... both mentally and physically?

It's mind over matter. I don't mind. It don't matter.

I have found that staying focused on the game and paying special attention to what you drink is important. As well sitting as often as possible allows you to stay strong and relaxed.

hey sponge thanks for the pm.good luck in that tourny ,should be a good field.i wonder if tyler and edwin are going?i think tyler moved to red deer.is john morra playing?good luck,it would be good to see you at the worlds.

I don't think so last year I think it was Harold Rousseau and Nick Guimond. I could be wrong. That could have been two years ago. Time flies.

But yeah top two finishers get to go to the Worlds paid.

i think your right it was 2 years ago, tyler finished 9th in worlds i do believe.he had a great tourny.

I think that is right because the year I played both Nick and Harold (two different events) was the same year they went to the worlds. And that was probably two years ago.

I just looked up the last 2 years ,could'nt find anything on tyler. I must be thinking of the masters or something.sorry,confused.:D

ahhhhhhh ha,just found it .I knew I was'nt on drugs.Go to az player finder.Tyler did finish 9th last years wpc.I dont know HOW he got there though.

No you were right I think. I think I played the boys two years ago so it would make sense that he would have won last year.

Confidence, mental preparation and a solid game. Always stay focused and remember that your opponents are humans too so they can be nervous as well and shaky under the pressure. The biggest threat is probably my good friend Danny Hewitt so if you can be in a mind frame that you can beat him, then you can beat anyone there.

Dany is indeed a monster. This year I am thinking my top three to win would mostly likely be:

1) John Morra
2) Tyler Eddy
3) Dany Hewitt

It would be nice to see Dany finally get to the world stage.

I am not naive enough to think I will win the event in my first attempt, however, any pro that shows up thinking they have a bye will have a long time on the B side to reconsider.
