I want to run a 9-Ball tournament tonight for 10 -32 players at a local establishment that has three tables. The players know each other and it will not be handicapped. I am thinking that something like a $50.00 get in, race to 5-7. Perhaps with a Calcutta.

Does any one have or know where I can get a manual or a set of instructions for someone who has never held a tournament. I need charts and everything, possible payout break down etc.

I don't think that greens fees are needed as the owner opens the tables for us anyway and he will probably play too.
 
I don't know that such a document exists, but I'll bet you you'll get plenty of advice here in this thread. :)

Charts - go to playpool.com, "downloads" section, all the charts you'll ever need for download. Also make sure you grab bye-chart information so you know how to properly spread byes out.

Payouts - it's really up to you, what you consider fair. I don't think there's any hard rules on this.
 
Most large tournaments pay back roughly 1/4 of the field. With smaller tournaments less places are paid. Often, when the players are close in skill and tournament is fair you can pay more to first couple places and less places as everyone feels they have equal opportunity to win.

If you have a calcutta, you should make all players aware there is a minimum bid on themselves. If most will not put an additional $10 or $20 on themself, the calcutta isn't worth it. You should have one blind bid unless you get over 16 players, then at most 2.

Also - just noticed that you (Joe) said you want to run that tournament "tonight". Not a lot of prep time. Keep it simple, this first go-around. I would skip messing with a calcutta, as from what I can tell, that just adds a whole extra level of complexity/accountability to the whole thing. Just run one tournament, keep it simple, and see how it goes - then fine-tune how you do things, and add some new stuff in later. Just my opinion.
 
One thing I can tell you, a 32 person "Single Elimination" Tourney will take 4 rounds to get to a finals match, but with three tables your looking at 11 rounds of play to get there....and with a 5-7 race......oh... 9-14 hours.
Double elimination......pack your breakfast and lunch.

Just my opinion ....

1) The tournament will take too long if you go over 16 players on 3 tables.
2) If this is a bar, and it sounds like it is, $50 is too high for an entry fee,
$30 would be better.
3) I would hold the Calcutta to get extra money in the Pot. $10 minimum bid, and each player gets themself for $10 if no other bids. You need railbirds there for Calcuttas to buy players, so advertise your tournaments.
4) 5 is too short, race to 7 for 9 ball. Race to 5 for is okay for 8 ball.

16 players x $30 = $480 plus Calcutta (about half of entry or $240) = $720 total money.

1st = $250, 2nd = $125, 3rd = $75, 4th = $30
Calcutta, pay 3 spots, approx. $120=1st, $80=2nd, $40=3rd

Make adjustments in the future, depending how this event goes off, more players, adjusting entry fee, etc.

If this will go into being a regular thing, I would look into purchasing Ingen 2.3 for $40, tournament software, and put it on a laptop to run the tournaments. It handles Calcuttas, break pots, etc.. Keeps players in a database from tournament to tournament. Ingen 2.3 handles up to 64 player tournaments.

What I have suggested gives you a good starting point, and the tournament would pay good to start with.
 
Thank you everyone. I think I can handle it. I'll probably leave out the Calcutta and make it $30.00 get in. I suspect there will be 10 -12 or so players that will be interested so it should go fairly quick. I hope.
 
Good luck with your tournament Joe, I'm sure you'll do just fine.
On a side note. I can just imagine about a dozen TD's, promoters, and a few players putting input into a manual for pool that ALL tours and tournaments must follow. What a war that would be. If they start today the manuals should be out by 2012. Keep in mind it only takes 1 or 2 days to print a few thousand books now. Johnnyt
