Tournament Winning Shot and I Sold Out...

I play in a weekly 8 ball bar box tourney. It's a race to one.... double elimination tourney. It usually draws more than 20 and caps at 32 players. There were 23 last night many of them better caliber players than me (not saying much) . I won my first 2 matches without problems, then got a little wobbly in the third, made a mistake and ended up on the one loss side. I broke and ran my next match (rare for me) and ran down to the 8 in the following rack blowing position. I put it and the CB in a good spot and wait until my opponent misses. I didn't miss the 8 a second time. I then ran into the guy who put me on the 1 loss side and sent him home.
I have another relatively uneventful match with the exception of the finish where I made a nice bank and left myself perfect on the 8.
Final match I have to win twice. I control the first rack for most of the game. I've got 2 left and I turn over the table. My opponent shoots and misses with 3 on the table in the process mucking the 8 up. I drop my 2 trying to get the 8 clear and failing, so I make a good hit put the 8 out in play and hope for the best. My opponent gets down to 1 and misses leaving me a sharp angle cut to the corner or a bank. Why oh why didn't I play the bank.....I fell for the sucker shot and went down to a cross side scratch....
I played some of my best pool last night and was as close as I have ever been to winning this tourney, I've taken 2nd 3 times now....

There's always next week...I am going to win it. I'm going to win it before summer...That's my new goal... win the rinky dink tourney before Memorial day weekend...

Thanks for letting me share.... Hope this wasn't too Trotter in tone...:D

forget which

I forget if it is the 99 essential shots or Freddy's Banking with the Beard that mentions that shot. It is a sucker shot if you don't protect the cue ball. Probably a little safer than the bank if you do protect the cue ball though.

Of course you already know this, with 20/20 hindsight!

Could you have used english to avoid the cross side scratch? A risky shot any way you cut it. Maybe you could of played the bank as a two way shot and if anything miss it short to leave a good safe. These situations are difficult as you want to play the shot you are most comfortable with. I probably would of tried to cut it in as well and applied a ton of left or right depending on how the balls were set up in order to avoid the scratch. That is the higher percentage shot for me, and what I would probably feel most comfortable shooting. But you are right, it is a sell out if you miss or scratch.

I hit it with inside english to tighten the rebound angle off the rail. I nearly missed the pocket, but caught the tit just enough on the pocket side for it to rebound in... I should have been patient played the reverse bank into the pocket I scratched in and just tried to leave the CB on the end rail as far away from his remaining ball. I knew what I was doing was risky, but the win was right there and I went for it.

I do the same thing, did it yesterday is a very big regional VNEA team tourney. I almost made the absolute best runout in my life, 3-rail breakouts, great shots, only to cut in the 8 and scratch off of a 4-ball in the side pocket. My opponent would not of been able to get out under any circumstances if I missed, but I went for the shot anyway. I even paid attention to the potential scratch, but I found a way to scratch a differently. I think that if I would have had a decent safety I would have taken it, but I should not have gone for that shot

I just don't understand why I can't play a little smarter. I always get in a position to win the game. When I lose, it's because I beat myself. What's up with this pool anyway?

I learned a valuable lesson about patience. I was so close to achieving my goal that I made a grab and slipped, instead of taking a couple more steps to where I didn't have to reach for it..... I will not make the same mistake again.

I played a scotch doubles tourney yesterday, took 4th (just out of the money) out of 13 teams. My partner sold out the last two racks, giving up ball in hand with his (our) final shot of the match. I could only sit and watch as our opponents easily ran out ending my day.He blew such an easy shot. Just a soft duck shot into the corner leaving me the duck in adjacent corner to get shape on the 8 sitting in the middle of the table. Instead he hits the shot so hard as to scratch in the side from the end rail! Incidently both the remaining balls our opponent had were close together on the same rail, so even if he hit it soft or rattled the pocket, they probably wouldn't have gotten out. He did the only thing he could to give them the game....Ball in hand... Noon until 8:30 to walk out one step away from the money.......Talk about frustration
