Tournament without alcohol

For those of you who have played and traveled to play in the Wild West Shootout in Great Falls, Montana we are hoping to start developing two similar annual tournaments in Missoula starting in the spring. The difference being played on Gold Crown 4's! Hoping to get the quality turnout that the 8 Ball in Great Falls has been able achieve but its all still in the developing stage. When's the last times we've had a quality BIG table tourney in Montana? :eek:
Bottom line is we have the time and room to do it..the kicker is it would be located on the University of Montana campus. This means issues regarding the ability to have alcohol. Being a month from 21 I'm just a bit ignorant with how important it is for players to be able to drink at the tournaments when they travel? Does a flask in the car suffice or will the dry pool hall affect turnout? Or is 15 nice GC's and a well run tournament enough?

I think its a problem. Would be easier to do at a pool room and thats where the room gets its $$$.

Thats why I'm still hoping to get catering with alcohol within the building but not in the room. Thats the best we can do, but University rules can be tough to manage around. The thing is this is not only the only REAL pool room in the city its the only one besides Montana State's game room in the STATE with big tables. So not much choice with location. Will have to further explore my options, thanks.

We had some success with doing a saturday tourney at MSU in the late 90's. We had people drive in from great falls. I'm sure you could get people from Bozeman (I think SethK and JeffB) are still there. We'd fill a 32 pretty easily.

Our method was to start early (10 a.m.) and get most of the people out of there before drinking became an issue.

We used to get great support from local businesses for these, also. Just calling and saying that you are from a university will be a huge help.

I don't know how many people you want, but I really doubt you'll have problems getting a good crowd.

Too bad you are just shy of 21--the holiday classic should be coming up in Bozeman.

On that note, you should call the BPOE in Bozeman--the owner (Dick, I believe) is a great guy and would have contacts for some of the best players in the state.

Thanks for your input! Talking to local business and mentioning being from the University is a great idea.

I heard the Holiday Classic wasn't on this year...that was what I heard last anyway but don't quote me.

It's great to hear that something like that has worked in the past. Hopefully this can get some of those players in the area out of the woodwork who just haven't played since big table play has died here. Anyways I'll keep you posted with further info! :thumbup:
 
If there is interest and it's a serious event I'm not sure it will be a big deal. The Swanee coming up in February will be held at Hard Times this year and there is no alcohol. I'm pretty confident they will fill the 192 player field in spite of HT being dry.

No alcohol may affect the rail more than the field.
