Training cue ball, question

Can you recommend a training cue ball? I'm new to the game and don't get lots of time to practice so I thought a training cue ball might help me learn English a little faster/better.

I've seen the Aramith Jim Rempe ball and a couple of others that just have a simple cross and circle on them.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

I prefer the Rempe training ball myself, the chalk shows up very well and it's a close match to Super Aramtih ball. However a regular stripe ball works just as well.

The "measles" (Aramith Pro Cup) cue ball doesn't come with instructions, but you learn a lot about spin just by using it - and you can use it in any game or practice routine.

They're overpriced these days ($30+), but you can still find them for the original $20 price on eBay.

IMO these training cue balls are the biggest waste of money you could ever dream up to spend your money on.

First they are totally useless, unless they are placed on the table perfectly vertically and horizontally correct, ie plumb and level.

Next, there is no information on this gimmick ball that you couldn't draw on a circle on a piece of paper to reference.

I say spend your money on a good book ( or two or three)

Keep your stick as parallel to the table as you can when you stroke the CB.

Stroke smoothly through the CB on your shots. Don't stab at them.

You will learn nothing more with this gimmick ball. It may however be valuable to throw at the neighbor's cat if it's making noise at night. JMO

The one thing the Rempe ball does well, if you have set it up properly is it shows you exactly where the tip actually struck the ball instead of where you thought you were aiming.

Any stroke flaws will be indicated when you do not hit the aim point.

You had me convinced to pass on the training ball until the "cats" part -- I might need to buy two of them:smile: Seriously, thanks for the stroke advice. I'll probably buy a few books and/or DVDs too, but the table and balls are at the community center so I can't just draw a reference dot on their cue ball.

There are cheaper versions with just basic lines/circles that would probably do the trick, but I'm nervous about buying a non-Aramith ball.

The Rempe ball seems to be the most recommended, which is why I bought it some time ago. The only reason to buy it was so I could see if I was striking the CB where I was aiming, but mine doesn't hold chalk for some reason. occasionally it leaves a ghost mark but barely viewable. Maybe mine is defective but I considered it money thrown away. Good luck.

If you don't find it useful, have you thought about either selling it or giving it away?
