Training possibility

the worthy one

What an opportunity for a young player! When I was coming up I would have went ashore at Omaha Beach in Normandy to get a shot like that. Sadly, the hard part is going to be getting someone worthy enough to receive that education. Especially when it comes to staying for the long haul. There will be a jillion guys that will swear up and down that they have the commitment to learn, but it will often turn out that their enthusiasm, dedication, and ambition will vanish once they come to realize just how committed you are and always were. I know where you are coming from. You are seeking someone that will match your mindset and fire, someone who will be just as anxious to learn as you will be to teach. I wish you luck.

I have a champion English pool player coming to Chicago to study under me in preparation for the IPT tour. He appears to have the desired attitudes. We shall see. It will be a pleasant surprise.

Maybe there should be a test of worthiness like in the legend of the Shaolin temple, where a prospective student waited for days in the cold winter snow for the Shaolin priest to let him in.....

I’ve been thinking seriously about taking a protégé/apprentice. Of course I’d have to sell the idea to the wife. Here’s what I’d offer:
1. He or she could stay with us for probably a year, maybe longer if things went smoothly.
2. Extensive training, including everything of value in pool.
3.I’d obtain sponsorship for this person, including the IPT venues. (Assuming we could get their game up to snuff.)
4. This person could be my corner person in the IPT tournaments.
5. Too many other areas of value to mention. I’d give him or her all this accumulated knowledge in my head, even proper gambling techniques. I, or some of my friends, would stake this person in matches for money.

Here is what I would require:
A. No drugs or alcohol and no criminal background. References required, of course.
B. Must be responsible, honest, hard working, dedicated, loyal and have a good personality ( speaks another language a plus).
C. Should be between 20 and 35 years of age.
D. The only thing I would charge would be for the food, drink and travel for this student, except I’d want an agreement to the effect that after I teach this person and get them in the IPT, I’d get 12 per cent of their earnings for three years.
E. Lastly, I don’t want any spoiled brats, just hopefully a serious lover of pool who’d like to really step up their game.

Serious inquiries only.

What a deal, Grady! God bless you for taking the chance to help a young man in this journey. Personally, I would have anyone applying to be screened carefully.

Perhaps you should tell prospective apprentices where you and your wife live. This could have a major impact on their decision and yours.

I hope you get someone worthy of your time and effort. I would hope that a young apprentice were he to become really successful would compensate you more than the few percent you are asking which is practically nothing.
Warm Regards,

This sounds like a great opportunity for reality TV show. Start out with 10 applicants and start eliminating. If you got the sponsors, this would be great for the IPT, Grady and the winner. I'd watch it.

What a great idea Tracy. That would be AWESOME. I don't watch TV but would make time for that reality show. I would love to see the tribulations and journey on a weekly basis.
Maybe if someone has some connections with the TV reality show makers they can pass your idea along.

To tell the truth, I hate reality TV, but this could get me in front of the tube. The prize as sweet as it already is, could be added to by the winner being guaranteed a spot on the IPT, after he has completed his apprenticeship. The show would hopefully endear the public to the winner, and cause them to tune into IPT tournament coverage to see how he is doing.

It's no secret where I live or how to reach me. My website, www.gradymathews.com has all that info.

I do have a number for a reality TV show producer. PM me, Grady if you want to take it to the next step.

Grady, you mentioned elsewhere that you'd prefer an A- player. By that, do you mean someone roughly the speed of, say: Lil Jon, Hennessee, or Amar Kang, for example? Or do you mean below that?

Thanks~ Doc

I think this would be a great chance for some one.I wish I didn't just have back surgery or I would like to have tried out, aslo I am only a high b player but I am very consistant in my game and always looking to get better.I should be back in the pool hall in about three weeks.Good luck to the person that gets the chance to learn from the master.

Who are you? I see you are from Canton Ohio.

Well Grady you had me till the running part, I might make it 2-3mi then you better call 911. 4 hours of practice I can do I normally play longer then that anyway, would be nice to have someone to actually seriously practice with for a change. Like your area there aren't any real pool halls around here. Atleast I have a bowling alley with 10 gold crowns if it wasn't for that I'd be stuck playing on bar boxes all the time, and lets just say I don't really care for bar pool. Only tournaments around here are bar tournaments so I play in them but I'd much rather be on a 9ft table. 9ball being "the game" is the reason I never went that extra mile and tried to make a living at pool, I can't stand 9ball. I've always been a 8ball player, love one pocket and straight pool too but I never have anyone around that'll play.

I wish you the best of luck in finding that perfect player your looking for Grady. We need more people like you in this world.

I expect to make a decision after returning from Vegas. Feel free to email me with your qualifications prior to that time.

Grady, This is without a doubt the most unselfish act any pool player I can remember has ever offered publicly. It without a doubt is a great opportunity for someone who is willing to work hard and has the talent. I spent a lot of time with Grady during the Rackem Up days in Columbia,SC and if the right person with the right attitude sends their resume, it will payoff dividends!
Grady, If you ever get out my way in Texas drop me an e-mail, there is 0 action where I am but a lot of great mexican food!
