TRAVEL/LODGING: Vegas IPT Tournament

The upcoming first IPT "official" tournament will be held July 22-30 at The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV: http://www.venetian.com

I have been checking around on the Internet for hotel specials for The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino, but haven't found anything CHEAP. After spending several hours on the search engines, I decided to just call up The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino to see if they had any specials. There is an IPT player's rate in effect for $179 per night, plus 9-percent tax, which comes to $195.11 per night. Believe me when I say, this is definitely a discount for The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino.

There are advantages to staying at the "host" hotel during a pool tournament, i.e., the comfort of having one's room nearby for rest, not having to rely on taxis or shuttles to get to the venue site, and convenience, et cetera. However, from talking to my counterpart who knows Las Vegas well, there are MANY hotels nearby which cost quite a bit less. The decision on WHERE to say is the question. It comes down to COST versus CONVENIENCE.

So, to Colin, Spadevil, Bernie, Linda, Aaron, IPT members, and AzB-ers, what are your thoughts about staying at the Venetian versus a less expensive hotel? I usually stay at the host hotel because there is one school of thought that doing so supports the tournament, but in this instance, I'm not quite sure that's the case. Any thoughts, ideas, and blessed opinions? :p

JAM [Won't even address the issue that I am afraid of airplanes and haven't flown in over 35 years. :(]

Forget it, you need a good plan on how you are going to do this within reason. Over a short period of time they have you in Vegas for over 40 days. You telling me you are willing to spend like $8000.00 or more just for a room, not to mention the rest of your expenses.

I'm not sure about the 40 days, but I would be telling an untruth if I said I was NOT concerned about the expense. :o

Getting the logistics in order is going to be a tough feat as it relates to the homefront. However, I am going to make the trek with optimism into a new frontier. As you so rightly state, though, Macguy, doing this "within reason" is key at this juncture.

Comparing this tournament to Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge, I have stayed at the Scanticon and the Radisson, which are the lodging facilities on site at the Valley Forge Conference Center, and I have also lodged at a nearby hotel. Traveling to and from a venue site can pose MAJOR problems, logistically speaking, and arriving at one's match on time is paramount.

Speaking from a player's point of view, I want to do everything in my power to make the trip comfortable, so that the player can concentrate on the tournament and feel rested as opposed to enduring a logistical nightmare. It comes down to COST versus CONVENIENCE.

Jam,

To be truthfully honest with you, I'd go to a Motel 6 that was no more than 15-20 minutes away from the Venitian and chill. I honestly wouldn't want to stay in the motel where everything is happening. But I can understand if you pull some late night ours at the tourney and all you have to do is take the elevator to your room instead of catching that cab to Motel 6.:D

40 days? Where does that figure come from?

It will probably be more depending how close the players want to cut it, getting there early and so on. 6 tournaments, around 7 to 9 days each. This is a lot of out of pocket especially for the international players. For the weaker players who after one tournament see they have no chance of doing well at all, I'm sure there will be a lot of second thoughts.

I used to mess with racing cars when I was young. We would spend all week working on the car getting ready for "Friday night under the lights" as they called it. But the reality was we didn't belong there. We are racing guys with sponsors who if they blew a engine had another in the truck ready to drop in. If we blew an engine we were out of action for a month and paying out of pocket. Sometimes you have to take a reality check and in this case there just are players on this tour who don't belong and will take a bath on this thing, maybe even looking foolish. I hope they find it was worth it when it's over.

You'll need to define "Cheap" for us JAM, everyone has different standards. (There's *some* people who've been mercilessly flamed for quibbling over $20 before now ;-)

FWIW My favorite hotel in Vegas at present is The Renaissance, which is fairly new and near the convention center rather than the strip. What I like is it has no casino, so nice and peaceful, has nice quality rooms with great beds, excellent food and great service in my experiences to date. You are 5 minutes from the Monorail which takes you to downtown in about 20 minutes at the most. Cost me about $110 a night for a medium-level room, they have some specials (AAA member, weekend specials etc.) but of course in July costs may be higher. There's also some kind of Mariott rewards point system you may want to check out with all the hotel stays you'll be making this season.

HTH.

JAM Downtown Lost Wages on FREMONT STREET, is where the Deals are. My 85 y/o Pops stay there all the time, it is were the Working Class Stay. Plus you will find DEALS on Food, and Low Stakes Games of Chance. Plus be where Lost Wages Starter. With all the money you save you can Limo it Daily to the Pool Venue...

Ahh, sorry, you may be right.

But with so much money at stake in the actual Pool tournament itself perhaps Jennie will be trying to keep her horse on a short leash? (If you'll pardon a mixed metaphor)

An impossible task... at best all she can do is not let him out of her sight so that she's there to instill common sense during those moments when the gambling over-rides common sense. :p

I am hoping they won't make staying at the host venue mandatory, although they may...the WPBA does. When they book a venue for 60,000 sf, they are asked how many rooms that will involve so they can secure it. However, if a statement isn't forthcoming in the next few days, I am going to go ahead and probably book a condo, as I want to make sure I can secure a room and flights.

Wow, a condo! That's the way to go, Linda. The airlines are raising their rates every single day, which is evident when you look at the gas prices. Here locally, the price of gas has gone up 30 cents in the last WEEK. So booking a flight early is very smart! :)

Ain't it the truth! :D Keith knows Vegas very well. He has a friend there in which we could stay for FREE -- he says -- but I'm thinking it would be better to stay on site because of the convenience. Since this will be my FIRST time in Vegas since I was a young girl, I am going to look at this as a very expensive pool vacation. Fortunately, I have no gambling addiction and can walk right by those casino game rooms, and Keith better brace himself for a choke collar and blinders as opposed to a leash. :D

I remember the first time we went to the Skins Billiards Championship in Atlantic City. Before the matches, the players were like zombies, each trying to get in their zone because of the $130,000 total purse which was at stake. It is the FIRST time I have seen the players so serious about a competition, some of them even nervous. With the IPT $2-million purse in Vegas this coming July, I think we're all going to see a new breed of pool player up ahead, and I can't wait to find out WHO takes it off at the first official event. :)

Jam, determine another hotel where you may want to stay and get the room rate. Add to that, the expense of transportation back and forth, a couple of times a day and don't forget to include tips. That would be the base cost of staying at the other location. Compare that to the higher rate of staying on sight and determine if the other hotel is worth the inconvenience.

I got a feeling that Keith has a friend in EVERY city that he could stay with if he wanted to.
JAM, could ya get a picture of Keith with the choke collar and blinders on? That'll be a hoot!
Good luck to you two, and I will see you there. Peace, John.

Staying in Vegas

Not familiar where the Venetician is, but sometimes just going across the street and maybe a block either eay, you can save yourself quite a bit of money. If you rent a car, or there are buses running, The Palace Station is west of the strip (across the bridge basically) and is real reasonable. Good casino to gamble.

I have had nice rooms at the Circus Circus for $85 a night. Took a cab from
Circus Circus (back entrance) to across the street to side entrance of the
Riveria, and it was $6,50 ... lol

I have stayed at the Pyramid, and it was okay, and fairly reasonable.

You shoud be able to find a decent room for the $65-90 range.

Jennie,

I have a friend on another forum who lives there and knows Vegas very well. I will contact him. Watch this space.

P.S. At the Venetian, make sure you get your picture taken with Luciano Pavoratti.

Heh, can you imagine JAM in a dominatrix outfit leading a shackled Keith on all fours into the IPT arena, carefully unlocking his restraints with a small silver key on a chain around her neck, handing him his cue and whispering his control word into his ear?

I bet the IPT would happily pay their travel and accomodation costs just to get that kind of publicity ;-)
