Triangle tip question

I've been experimenting with cues, tips, shafts, all day today. I noticed that the McDermott with the Triangle tip feels a little softer than the other cues. It's the only cue I have with a Triangle tip so I can't compare it very well to my other shafts with the same tips.

Does anyone know if the Triangle hits a little softer than other tips (Sniper, Moori, Le Pro), or is it the McDermott cue that makes the hit feel a little softer?

I'm not sure if it's softer or it just feels different than my other tips. Anyone out there with a McDermott/Triangle tip that can help?

Triangle is harder than LePro, could be that the joint that McDermott uses causes the tip to feel softer (It's technically a hard tip)

That's really strange....all of my LePro tips feel like a harder hit. However, the cue with the Moori feels almost just like the McDermott. Very stange.
 
I also like the McDermott Triangle hit !

I was starting to think it was my imagination but i have installed moori tips on most of my other cues and recently bought a new McDermott and the hit is really good:)

Glad to hear someone else is having the same experience. One other thing to add is that the Triangle on the McDermott does not seem to be pressed. Looks like it was installed right out of the box. The tip is a little higher (thicker) than my other tips, so that may be a difference too. Out of all the tips I tried today (Lepro, pressed Elk Master, non-pressed Elk Master, Sniper, Moori, Tiger Everest), the Moori and Triangle were very close. Granted they were all on different shafts, so my experiment may have been seriously flawed.

Also, the McDermott is 3/8 x10, wood to wood, just like most of my other shafts. So the joint/pin should not be affecting the hit. It has to be the tips.

any thoughts?

Think that has anything to do with it?

Probably. BTW, I use Triangle tips on most of my shafts. I have always liked the feel and especially like the way they hold up. The ones I use don't appear to be pressed either. I think that is why, for a hard tip, it plays a little softer than you would expect.

It is possible that it was a bad tip that was glued on. I personally like triagles but I dip them and press them so they are firmer than your regular triangle tip. Usually in a box of 50 about 1/3 of them are bad tips and are cork like. Unfortunately, if you have one on your cue there is nothing that can be done but just have it replaced.
 
I was thinking the same thing fool. Probably a spongey Triangle. One way to tell the good from bad Traingles is to briefly put them in a bowl of water. The ones that sink are good ones the ones that float will be poor tips. Only you can decide what to do with the tips that don't quite float or sink!

Guys, I wasn't even aware that anyone considered them a hard or firm tip. Years ago, before they changed their mixture, triangles was a firm tip.

Today even the best triangle is still soft. Jed, I wouldn't be concerned with your equipment because it is simply a soft tip.

Thanks rod. I thought the thing felt softer than the others. I'm not concerned that my equipment may be bad, I'm actually impressed with the tip. I like the way it feels. It feels just as good, maybe a little better to me, than my Moori and a lot cheaper. I'm going to change one of my other shafts to the Triangle and if it feels the same as the McDermott, I plan on changing all my shafts to Triangle.

Most tips are rated by rubber durometer hardness readings which are useless. Triangle tips read harder than LePro but play much softer. If you press the Triangle in a vise before installing, it will firm up to a nice medium hard hit. Very similar to the Sniper in feel. It will hit softer than Lepro or Moori and will grip the ball better than both. If you don't press it in a vise it will have a spongey feel similar to the Elk Master which is probably what was done with yours.

Chris, that sounds pretty accurate. What is the best way to test hardness ratings on tips? Well other than playing with them. LOL
