I have the oppurtunity to pick up a Scruggs sneaky pete with a hoppe ring and black joints. I know he is not making cues anymore and he stopped making Sneakies a long time ago.. how much is it worth if it is 90% shape?

Around $400 give or take based upon the condition and the age. If I were you I would pass on the cue, you could get a lot more cue for the same money in this market!!!!!

Without pics it's hard to tell but I have an old Scruggs sneaky with a
Hoppe ring, black phenolic joint, and I would say over $550.
Those are sought after.
I would definitely pick it up.

Pass on the cue??? I would probably find out how much it REALLY cost FIRST!!

Ts

In the late 90's, that cue originally sold for $300 new.

Most were Cocbolo or Bacote. If you find an Ebony one, it is much more rare. (Ebony ones were $350+ new and built in the early 90's, only)

Today, in G-Vg condition, cue is worth a minimum of double the original retail and more if VG-Mint.

Thanks for your opinion, but stick to tables!!;)

Scruffy, I apologize for the comments above you did not deserve them and I was out of line for making that statement!!!!

Sincerely

I also don't understand the "I would pass" comment, but to each his own!!

TS Sneaky's are desireable and if gotten at the right are a good way to go.

More cue can be had for the same money, but not nearly as collectible.

Decent plain ones are selling for about $500+ . The ones with Hoppe rings are worth more. I would say it's a pretty good long term keeper if you can pick it up for for $600 or so - if you do, keep it, don't sell it. I have 2 basic TS sneaky's, one is perfect and I wouldn't sell it for less than $600. in fact, I wouldn't sell it even for that.

I like the older ones the best.

I will,if you agree to stop being a psychic and guessing what price is on the cue before telling someone to pass!!LOL . How about 100.00? Are you still passing?;)

Russ, my comments are based upon the price for plain Jane cue, that wasn't even made by Tim even though it came from his shop. This has been discussed on forum many times in the past, it appears that Bob Frey made the most if not all the Sneakies coming from the Scruggs shop.

But, mainly my comments were based upon the fact that with the market the way it currently is a person can get allot of cue for the same money. For $500 to $600 there are a number of great buys out that there that will only gain in value over time, while a Sneaky Pete, even a Scruggs has pretty much reached it potential and can't really get much higher in value.

Your right, maybe the cue is for sale for $10 I don't know, but the odds are that the cue is for sale for $400 +.

Take Care

I certainly hope you're wrong. I have a nice Bill Schick sneaky that I'm holding onto tightly with both hands.

Craig's probably right about the values maxing out on these sneakies, but I don't think they will go down in value. They have edged up over the years to the current slightly inflated "collectible" values.

I've been pretty darn impressed with some of the sales lately of the vintage collector cues in my area of interest - not too bad for a down market. I've been picking up undervalued cues when I can and there are enough bargains out there to make it a good time to pick up cues at distressed prices.

I think Manwon was saying that he figured the cue would be in the $400 range and at that price he'd suggest passing on it since, IHO, other comparable cues could be had for less.

A lot depends on whether the op is interested in a player, flipping it quick, or buying it for an investment/collection.

I have seen plain true sneakys by TS in vg condition fetch just over $700 not too long ago.

I believe the right number is probably somewhere between $600-$700 for a nice one.

It's all about supply and demand though, and, to be honest, I don't see a whole lot of really nice TS sneakys coming onto the market.

Another interesting point is that true sneakys (no joint, rings, butt cap), while possibly worth less (this is debatable) than the fancier sp's, are the cues that folks hoping to fly under the radar are really after. You know, the house cue look.

I have a TS stunner with two shafts (one made by Proficient) that I will post pics of below.

Anyone know what wood this is? Really nice grain, first thought it was mahogany, but now thinking not.

G/L with your possible purchase. Let us know what you decide.

Best,
Brian kc

FWIW, last year I saw a TS sneaky pete butt with a warped shaft. I called up the shop to price out a shaft. A man identified himself as Mike Cochran told me over the telephone that neither him or Tim Scruggs made any sneaky petes bearing the TS trademark. They had a guy make it for them in the shop, and stopped offering when the old man retired. I asked if that old man was Bob Frey, and was told no.

Mike told me that he ran the shop day to day, if I sent in a Scruggs for work or repair, he'll be doing it actual work, not Mr. Scruggs. They don't do any work on sneakies, and offered a referral for someone in my area.

Manwon, funny when I mentioned buying a TS sneaky pete to a couple of local cue dealers and collectors, everyone echoed the same sentiment.

3rd, don't believe all the hype in the AZ forsale section. I'll tell you my Paul Huebler story.

This is very close to the right story regarding the TS Sneaky's. It was Jeff W. who built the Sneaky's at Tim's shop on Leeds Avenue. They were all made in shop. By the way, Jeff is a younger man than what Mike Cochran had been. The Sneaky's stopped production when Jeff got a job at UPS or something like that.

I found this thread on J*mb*'s Army, with more information on the history of Tim Scruggs Sneaky Petes.

TS Sneaky with Hoppe ring and black joint

Joe Salazar of Connoisseur of Custom Cues told me at the US Open a few years ago there were worth around $800. I asked why because he said so few of them were made that way. He also said that was the value with 1 shaft.

I was surprised when he told me...............mainly because I have 1 that has 2 shafts.

Take it for what it's worth.
