I just ran across a movie starring Famke Janssen (from x-men, rounders,etc..) where she played a pool and poker hustler who had lost her son due to a coniving grandma from the father's side. She decides she wants to take her son and run to Canada and have a life since the pressure from the grandma is driving the ex husband to drink and beat the son.

She has to get money together to pay for papers to get into Canada, so she hooks up with her old backer and sets up a hustle to make a final score....

I thought it was a pretty good movie....

Anyone else seen it and have any thoughts on it?

p.s. it did have a small part with Tony Robles in it....
 
Yeah, same here... I thought it was just OK. I went into the movie expecting it to be mainly focused on pool, but it didn't. It's been a while since I've seen it, but if I remember correctly, there was not much pool playing going on in the movie.
 
Agree with muddawg and Johnnyt completely - I expected it to be better. Not a bad movie, and where pool is concerned these days it's slim pickings, but there wasn't a lot of pool in it, more of a story with a little bit of pool and poker as a backdrop.

I hesitated posting this reply because it's nothing new, I...just like the others...was less than impressed with the movie. I've seen all the movies associated with pool and although some are worse than this, I still put this near the bottom. Not because it wasn't all about pool but because the story line was blah.

do a search it's been covered to death. most think it could have been better. i thought it was horrible.
 
Haven't seen the movie. Unless she kills somebody with her thighs, as in that Bond flick, I'm not interested. :groucho:

You do a search for turn the river and see what comes up.....I did do a search before I submitted the thread....

Like with ALL movies, there's going to be dissenting viewpoints,....

It seems like everyone wants any pool movie that comes along to be the hustler or better...

Come on.....This movie had a sucky ending but the story seems pretty close to how it may be out there in some cases... so I posted it AFTER doing a search and not finding anything....atleast not on the first page or two of the search results.

no need to get angry - sometimes you gotta try different things in the search box. turn the river gives a bunch of non related threads because the search uses every word you put in. so you get a lot of threads about turning down shats and things like that. type in famke - ms. jansen's first name and you'll get 'em all. my beef with the movie is i thought the plot was week, the ending was horrible and the acting left much to be desired. and i'm not looking for the hustler or the color of money from every pool movie. i just think that a lot of them are all of this caliber. low budget, bad acting and week stories. and believe me i'm not just bashing them for the sake of bashing. i still support them because they are related to our sport of choice. i own pool hall junkies and shooting gallery as well as the hustler and TCOM. i just made the statement i thought that one was the worst of the bad movies i have seen so far. it's just my opinion, you don't have to agree. i wasn't trying to attack you about doing a search - i was offering a suggestion that's all. i can't read your mind and know that you did one and didn't find anything.

For what it was, it was ok, could have been better, I liked it better then PHJ in some areas, simply because it had a better plot line and was more drama based, showing more of the mental side of her life. The ending was rather predictable from about 3/4 way through.


Now as for it being covered here before, I am sure it has been, so have 1000's of other posts time and time again. Cut the OP some slack.
 
Or you can try typing the "Turn The River" in quotation marks and limit the search to the title of threads only. Results here. Only three pages long and it's easy to narrow down which ones are for the film.

I agree the search function for messageboards aren't the greatest :)
