My friend has a cheap cue that he wants to turn into a breakcue .
He wants to know if he needs to change the ferrule as well or just put on the samsara breaktip he just bought ?

I see a lot of people that just use a SP with a standard tip and ferrule for a break cue and it breaks alright.

A hard break tip adds a little to the break shot.

A phenolic ferrule and a good break tip will be a lot better.

For the ultimate add a purple heart shaft with a phenolic ferrule and a break tip.

They all work but you can do better. Don't fall into the trap of a heavy break cue. Your arm can move a lighter stick faster and a faster cue ball breaks the rack better.

Make your break stick about the same weight as your shooter.

Take out any weight bolts.

Drill a 1/2 hole in the butt and take out some more weight, try to get it in the 17s.

Put on a brown Water-buffalo.

That should do it.

Phenolic ferrule and the Samsara tip would do better for him than just doing the tip... though the tip alone will help.

I did this with an old playing cue once. I actually had an OB break shaft, with Samsara tip, fitted to it and it worked like a charm.

A PH shaft, G-10 or phenolic ferrule and Samsara J/B tip will do the job.
