ahhhhhh hahaha yeah man, I'm stoked!

On the topic of travel, one of my resolutions is to pick my game back up (I have a 10' table at home but rarely play anymore, except with my boys - the consequence of having multiple jobs ...). I want to start hitting small tournaments in the US, if for no other reason that to do some traveling here in our own country.

I'd be interested to know which of us on this forum have rooms/tournaments in our towns/nearby. Would like to put some small trips together.

Unfortunately, I'm in New Orleans where the scene is near non-existent. I haven't been to any of the Vietnamese rooms for so long, I don't know if they have tournaments at all really.

I bet Richard in Houston knows of some tournaments ... ?

We have a glorious new room in the DC suburbs.

They did one tournament. Players arranged their own match times over the week and then the last 4 played on Sat or Sun.

I'm down for that, I'll let you know when I'm coming. For my work I'm about to start having to go to DC quarterly and am actually quite looking forward to it.

as you know the viets pretty much keep to themselves so i dont know any more than you would, but i would call up the rooms beforehand and ask them if they did them or know of ones that do. its hard enough to get pool players consistently playing in a tournament.

lol wish i had better info for you man

@Texas3cushion knows a lot of the Vietnamese carom rooms and players in Houston. He has confirmed to me what you say: that it does take some time to break the ice with them. He's never mentioned any tournaments to me, but maybe he knows of some...

theres been a few i recall a couple yrs back but they really only advertise them to the room players, nothing ever posted online so we will never know unless your just around the area often

@happy_B01 is a local houston 3c player, if he dont know no one does lol

Yeah, I've spent a good bit of time in Viet rooms in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, very "off the beaten path" types of places. There are some newer ones now I haven't visited, but years ago I was in the some holes in the wall and always had fun.

Folks were always very cool with me and would happily play a friendly game, but I never saw or heard of any tournaments. Billiards itself was really an afterthought. A few of these places would have 8-12 tables ringing the room for card games with what I am sure must have been several hundred thousand $$$ in cash being played with. Many big stacks.

I went one time with a friend and we played for about 3 hours, drank 12+ Heinekens, and the guy at the counter charged $20. A week later I went back on my lunch hour at work, practiced for an hour, drank one water, and it was $20. I told a Viet buddy about it and he goes, 'Shoot man, that place has billiard tables? I just thought they were a bookie ONLY!'

At another one on the westbank that had 4 tables I was there around 4 in the afternoon one time when a blacked out Mercedes pulled into the oyster shell parking lot and just circled the thing several times, like a shark. It was a block construction building and nobody said anything, just sort of quietly put down cues and backed up to the wall. The owner walked over and locked the door and closed the blinds.

After a couple minutes the car left and everyone went back to playing like normal. That's not the weirdest thing I ever saw being from NOLA by even a long shot, but I still paid my tab and left.

There are definitely many places to play 3c in Houston. Some better than others. It's not always easy to find someone to play so better to come with a friend. But if anyone from out of town wants to see some of the places I'd gladly show them.

The viets here are cool if your cool.

As for tournaments are not common. I'd say they happen about twice a year but it's all word of mouth. If you're not in the loop then you won't know about it.

The 17th of November is my 'free' day in Paris so if anyone is around, I would love to meet up for a game. It's free for me because that's the day they go see the catacombs, and my horrific claustrophobia has exempted me from having to do that.

Ironically, I would happily meet to play in even the tiniest of billiard parlors ... :)

From there, the wife has us taking the overnight train to Switzerland and so it looks like Paris or the surrounds will be my only France stop for billards.

If you have some time, please go by Club Montmartre at 84 Rue de Clichy (Metro: Place de Clichy) and see if they have any tables left. That is the place mentioned in post #19. That also might be a quick stop if you visit Sacre Coeur and/or Montmartre. It's a seven minute walk from the Moulin Rouge.

Some cafes/bars have small carom tables, or used to. Try asking at the hotel and/or waiters.

This place is near the Pere Lachaise cemetery in case you get by there. Address: 9 Cr. Debille. Metro: Voltaire. The info I found says it has two carom tables.
