Everyone is different. My eyes fail me on long down the rail shots...I have to mentally adjust...and tell myself to "shoot it straighter" than my instincts and eyes tell me. I used to narrowly miss those shot's consistently thin.

That's my personal bugaboo.

Are you talking cut shots (down the rail) or straight down the rail shots?

If it is cut shots, then you probably are not compensating for CIT. You can get away with it when shooting at a full pocket but when down the rail, the pocket is much smaller.
If it is straight in shots, try focusing on the bottom of the object ball. This may help you take your eyes off the rail!

I have 2 mental blocks myself that I always have to stop and look twice (or 5 times) at before shooting.

First is long rail cuts or straight shots - I almost always shoot them about an inch wide of the pocket when shooting on instinct.

The other is, believe it or not, shallow cuts when the ball is farther than 3" but shorter than 10" from the short rail, shooting into the corner across the table short ways. It is weird but that shot takes a three ball combo's level of concentration for me to line it up properly.

I need to just set these shots up and shoot them for a few hours eyes open and closed as I think there are 2 issues at work:

1. I second guess mid stroke and adjust there - shooting eyes closed always breaks me of that (line up and close them for the final stroke).

2. Incorrect line of aim - only practice until I hit the shots consistently will fix this I think.

I would be interested to hear what shots other people struggle with or have struggled with in the past and how they worked through them.

You're missing the shallow shots due to eye dominance/alignment problems. Move your head left or right slightly to gain the correct picture of your shot. This is a common problem and one that I conquered with a little investigation.

What type of stroke are you using on the long rail cuts? Draw, stun, high?

Best,
Mike

I shoot them with whatever will get me the shape I need on the next shot. Lately though I have reverted to dead centerball until I get it right consistently. After that the plan is to work on different tip positions on the CB and adjust for those.
