U.S. OPEN 2026, Frisco, Texas, August 25-30

After Filler won the UK Open earlier this year, there was chatter on here that nobody was on his level.

But he has not even sniffed the finals of these last few WNT events, and it's still anyone's game as far as 800 + Fargo rated players go.
He did make the QF in this US Open, barely losing hill-hill to the eventual champion. It can both be true that no one is on his level and he doesn't win every tournament.

I've been a regular Rogan listener for well over a decade - the guy has 0 political agenda and has beliefs all over the political spectrum. He's been supportive of some of Bernie Sanders' ideas, some of Andrew Yang's ideas, some of Gary Johnson's ideas, and yes some of the Trump/Vance ideas.

"would be great if he had just stuck to sports" ... he is literally famous for having long form conversations on his podcast about things he's interested in. Aside from UFC, his podcast is about 0.0001% sports lol
0 political agenda? LOL. Come on.

Rogan's wikipedia page has almost 2000 words describing his political views. He is one of the most well-known political figures and commentators in America.

Is he really that much better than Fedor Gorst, KPC, SVB, FSR of late, etc. though? I still think he's the best but the gap between him and the other top tier players is not enormous by any means IMO.

His show is not inherently political whatsoever. The fact that his wikipedia page describes his political views is more indicative of the current political climate than it is about him as a public figure.

FSR and Shaw are both clear HOFers. The standard is not SVB or Earl, or else there'd be no more than about five people in the HOF.

Kim Davenport
Rodney Morris
Tom Rossman

Are all in there (and I just looked at the 2011-2018 inductions). A bunch of "industry titans" are in there. If a US Open champ, a 7x Mosconi Cup champ, and the world-record holder of 832 (!!) in straight pool, plus dozens of other tournament wins, isn't a HOFer then the HOF is not doing its job of identifying and immortalizing the top players of each generation.
You gotta start by differentiating the people getting in on “Meritorious Service” vs getting in on the “Greatest Player” category. Then you have to remember that pool is deep in an international era these days with multiple major opens and world championships available. That’s very different than what pool looked like in the 70s, 80s and 90s. You look through different lenses for each era. Like when you look at Rodney and Kim.

But the modern lens?

Jayson has peers that have won the US Open, Intl Open, multiple world championships. It begs the question whether someone that never won a world championship in a relevant discipline makes the cut. You gotta weigh his US Open, 2x Intl Open, and Hanoi Open heavily. I think you gotta weigh his exhibition performances lighter. You can make a case he crossed the line. But amongst his peers, it’s an “eke in” not a “kick the door in” resume. But for me, I do tend to agree he crossed the threshold.

Ok, thanks for the info.

But I must ask - what shade of grey? Or is there only one shade of grey by CPBA cloth?
Only one grey in the Royal Apex Series, which is what Matchroom is using.

Shaw also gets credit for the world blackball championship and the straight pool record, not to mention his epic Mosconi Cup performances and his showmanship in the process. Without those he's not in the HOF.

From AtLarge's summary post of career Mosconi records, Shaw's is (10 yrs. -- 2016-2025) ..... 17-6 s, 16-11 d, 8-6 t, 41-23 total A (64%), 26.6-12.7 total B (68%).

I doubt it. Most young folks don't have cable. They have an app and a subscription lik eyou said. They aren't browsing TV out of boredom anymore. They know what they want to watch ahead of time, and tune in just for that event.

Like for me, I only subscribe to HBO to watch the Giro D'Italia and any other Italian one-day races or the odd stage race, then I pause the subscription. Same with Peacock for the Tour and Vuelta and whatever other ASO races are being streamed by NBC or the olympics, then subscription gets paused until I want to watch something else.

None of my friends have just basic cable anymore. My parents do, but they are boomers.

same as over here then. my parents have a zillion channels they never watch. the kids don't watch cable, in fact they don't watch much on tv at all vs the tablet/phone.

it's possible joe rogan was a bigger thing than ESPN. 🤣 he has the worlds biggest podcast.

I think the blackball championship only gets credited because we want him in. In general the BCA HoF has not had a history of inducting players that have dominated in that arena like Mick Hill or Gareth Potts. Or does it make more sense for those disciplines to just have their own HoF. Otherwise it feels like cherry picking just for Jayson. Do we do the same for Melling?

And honestly I’m trying my hardest not to stump against Jayson. I’m a huge fan. I just find it thought provoking to discuss how different people can have a different litmus test on this topic. And how there’s a push/pull between honoring the household names you know and love vs. trying to toe a hard line to ensure the recognition means something to the highest pedigree of significance.

do you think if you did 2-3 hour podcasts on a daily basis that you would say something political now and then? he mostly talks about aliens, comedy and mma

Most people barely recognize that their statements are political.

Like how criticizing someone's political beliefs IS a political statement.

I agree with you. His case seemed pretty flimsy all things considered and the blackball championship was a backdoor justification. Pretty much all HOFers will have at least one world championship and that checked the box for Shaw.

I was unimpressed with Rogan. He voiced his unfiltered opinions, yes, but he added very little of substance or entertainment value. And "very little" might be overstating it.

If he wasn't as well known as he is, people would be laughing the amateur pool commentator hack out of the booth.
Doesn't matter, just it being him will draw in people that wouldn't have necessarily wanted to watch. We need a broader audience than just pool fans.

Blackball is not pool, so that should not factor into his HOF resume IMO. Neither should a straight pool record that no top pro was trying to break other than him. It's impressive that he ran the 700 balls or whatever it was, but let's be honest here: if tomorrow some big sponsor announced a million dollar prize for the first person to break Shaw's record, it would be broken.

Similarly, Mosconi cup is an exhibition. It should not carry any weight in HOF consideration. Especially considering that it's essentially a no-contest most years.

I think Shaw is an interesting borderline case for the HOF. There's no doubt that when he's in top form, he's almost in a league of his own -- only Earl I would say has ever made the game look quite as effortless as Shaw did in his final match to win the International Open against Lechner, for example. But the problem is that that's Shaws' A-game. His average game is not nearly that elite, and his tournament resume is not even close to someone like FSR. I could go either way on whether he deserves a HOF spot, but ultimately I probably lean yes.

If Shane had been eligible for the HoF in 2021 - before the finally won the World 9b and World 8b - do you think he wouldn’t have been a lock?

Corey never won a world championship - although I don’t think he was a “lock” I think he’s a deserving member.

I haven't read this entire thread.

What kind of cloth were they playing on?

And what was the color?

And I assume that was a Diamond ProAm built with drop pockets vs a ball return. Correct?
CPBA royal apex cloth in grey with dynasphere WNT ball set and yes on the drop pockets although all of the non tv tables have ball returns

I only recall seeing this application of the shot clock rule in accu-stats events (Pat Fleming), not WPA. And I with they would all do this. It is influencing the outcome too much to throw in beeps, or especially officials on the sidelines calling out 10 or 5.
At least for a while in pro carom events, the players got a number of timeouts for the whole match and there would be no beeper for the first expiration(s). The time would just be silently extended, and the player would be notified of the used extension after the shot.
