Who all among you are planning on attending the U.S. Open One Pocket at the Qlympics on Nov. 5th? I'm trying to justify spending the $1000 to go. I'm sure this could be a major one-pocket event, but the timing and venue seem to have thrown everyone for a loop. Mark has promoted the event, but I have heard very few people talking it up. The money is guaranteed no matter who shows up. But I'd hate to play in a field of 40 players, which might include 6-8 pros. Two and out would translate to $500 per match...

I will be attending the event but I will be unable to play. I have several friends here in town that will be playing. I can hook you up with some local action if you are interested. Bet as much or as little as you want...if that helps to make your decsion.

Thanks for the offer, Aaron. However if there is no more response than there has been so far, I'll probably skip the event. I'm surprised that a big production like this has not gotten more attention.

Ha! Remember it was real dark in the poolroom. I look all of 63 in bright light...:( It was nice meeting you at Grady's. It was also nice to chat with Jerry Forsyth and Eric.

US Open 1-pocket

Hey Doc,

I am also suprised at the slow signups for all of the US Open events. But as you said, the added moeny is guaranteed.

It is still a month away and it always seems the players wait until the last minute to sign up. I am hoping that the event will at least see daylight. I expect to loose pretty big on this one. That is too bad - because I am still just trying to get the pros and the amatuers to play in the same venues.

If we do really bad, I may have to rethink doing the event in latter years. All I can say is that we wil do everything we can to make it interesting. There will be mini tournaments almost every night. (In all disciplines).

We also are having SVB playing Earl in a race to 100 (Action report 2). Accustats will be there as will AZBroadcasting and the Action Report.

I am hoping the players will come by and check it out. There is no admission this year so the price is right to watch some good pool.

I am still going to try and have some kind of senior events - if there is enough "old guys" around.

If you have any questions, please contact me. If nothing else Doc, we can play - I'll be there for 18 dyas!!!!

I understand that Grady will be there from Nov. 12-16 doing commentary on the SVB/Strickland match, and possibly on the 14.1 and 10-ball events. Whether or not he'll play in the events, I couldn't say.

Hey Mark, The money is guaranteed, except....I have heard that if you finish in the money, you will not get paid all of the money that you have coming, unless you commit to staying at the host hotel for a required amount of days. What if you live in or near Louisville and don't need a hotel room ?....What if you have friends to stay with in Louisville and don't need a hotel room ?....Or what if you travel to tournaments in your RV and don't need a hotel room ?, etc............Would you please address this issue - I know of 2 players who probably aren't going for this reason.

US Open Added Money

One Pocket Ghost;

Here is the thought process behind the requirement that a player stay at the Host Hotel.

This event has a LOT of added money ($30,000 guaranteed to US Open and BCAPL). The players really should try to support the locations that support pool. The Clarion is providing the space and a reasonable room rate.

A player will get every penny they earn from how they place in the event. If they want to "participate" in the added money, they will have to be a registered guest. I find that only fair because there are just so many expenses that have to be covered somewhere. This is really quite similar to a player no being involved in a calcutta - they still get the tournament prize but none of the "side" money.

If a player lives in Floyd or Clark County (IN) or Jefferson County (KY) they are "exempt" from this requirement.

If this causes players to not play - then that just shows they are not willing to support the event. If that is the case, the event will just go away. I will be brutally honest here - this event will probably lose $50,000+. I feel the players need events and this has the possibility to grow into a great one. If there is no support then I will always know that I tried my best and it just did not work. This is actually a great opportunity for many players because many of the TOP players will be at the WPC in Manilla.

However, I really feel that players need to select their priorities - events not in pool rooms have huge costs and need player and spectator support. There is no city sponsorship or other outside sponsors for this first year. If we are half successful, we can make this grow into a monster event. But the players will need to support it.

It is no secret that tournments try to make ends meet several ways. One is a room rebate. There is no door charge. So the main source of offset will be room rebates.

Unfortunately, that is the facts of life. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-719-7665. I probably have a lot more to say but there are space limitations here.

Thanks Mark for the info.

So am I to understand that there is no spectator's fee for any of the tournament, or just the SVB/Earl match?

Thanks again.

Spectator fees

Mike,

That is correct, there are no spectator fees. The SVB/Earl match is being handled by "The Action Report" - I expect there to be a door charge for that - it will be in a seperate room.

I encourage all players/spectators to come by and check out the action etc.

There are about 8-10 vendors and I am hoping everyone can see something they NEED (or want).

Mark, everyone in the pool world owes you a debt of gratitude for all you've done to promote pool. And I also believe your events deserve everyone's support. I myself have happily bought plane tickets, rented a car, and paid entry fees to play in one of your tournaments that I had absolutely to chance of cashing in. And I think the Qlympics is a great idea too and I wish it every success for years to come -- your events are always first class.

But tournament rules should be equitably enforced and this rule -- that you must stay at the hotel or you cannot participate in the added monies -- is unfair, IMO. Certainly you realize that participating in the added monies is, realistically, a long odds proposition for an amateur player like me, so that's not central to why I'm taking issue with it. It's simply the idea that if a player has friends in Louisville that are willing to put them up, or if they travel in an RV, or are just low on cash and need to crash in their car or some other improvised locale, they won't be treated the same as everyone else in the tournament.

Staying at the hosting venue makes all the sense in the world. You can be in the tournament arena and just walk to your room for a nap or shower whenever you like. You cannot beat the convenience. And I'd guess, at a most reasonable $79 a night, you are automatically going to get 95% of the out-of-town players that need a hotel room. But why be unfair to the 5%? Depending on the number of events they're participating in, and whether they're splitting a room, they could be looking at anywhere from a $100 to a $1200 in additional room expense that they might otherwise avoid. Clearly, in some circumstances, it's not an issue of players not being willing to support your event, just economic common sense.

I can only imagine the costs involved with putting on an event like this, and no one could take issue with a promoter's efforts to cover expenses or make a profit. But that should not be achieved at the expense of fairness to *all* the players. It's sorta like saying, everyone staying at the Clarion gets BIH after the break. Those that are not staying at the hotel, don't (players living in Floyd, Clark, or Jefferson County exempt :-).

Personally, I think that everyone who is a potential entrant into one of your tournaments wants to support it and wants it to succeed and is likely to stay at the Clarion anyway. But regardless, for the price of your entry fee you should be entitled to fair treatment, instead of some players being taxed more than others playing in the very same event. Of course that's JMO. Obviously it's your event, you're paying the bills, soooo ultimately, it is your rules.

Hi Lou

First of all, thanks for your thoughts. And I do see your side of it. But I also see the "other" side.

It is not about making a profit - I do most of my events to promote pool - Diamond Tables and BCAPL. This event may never see a profit.

But I think the players need to support the venues that support pool. I do not see it as a handicap situation. I just wish there was an easier, better way. But right now there does not seem to be one.

If we keep pounding along, I think we might find a sponsor etc. In the scheme of things, we arer not really talking about a lot of money - maybe $50,000 or so and we could make this a world class event. I am hoping it grows to that level.

It would just bother me to see players stay down the road to save $5 or $10 a night. The hotel down the road does nothing to promote pool - yet they make a gain and the people involved come up short. I am hoping to get the players and spectators involved which will make the burden less on everyone.

Next year, there might be a cover charge - which will gently encourage people to play. This is not the Derby however, this is a true Double Elimination event. I am just trying to make it almost work.

Again, I am sorry if anyone disagrees. But it seems logical for almost everyone to stay at the Clarion - the convenience alone should be worth any difference someone will find.

Anyway - I know it is my event BUT don't want anyone to think I am "throwing" my weight around - I really do try to listen to intelligent criticism. So any more thoughts or comments - please throw it this way and I'll try to implement it for future events.

PS Buddy Hall just confirmed for all 4 events. The bigger guns (those not at WPC) are starting to be heard from.

I see your point and there would be alot of guys stay down the street to save 40 bucks for a few nights, I have always staid at the Executive Center for the Derby for convience and thought the Qlympics was to be there also and was ready to reserve the rooms there. My question is: is there another location in Louisville as big or bigger than the Derby City location or has the name changed to Clarion?

Leonard

i think....

Does this mean that SVB and ES won't be attending WPC? Or if they are, they are not expected to go deep? WPC finishes on Nov 11. That's very tight a schedule to travel back from Manila to whereever in the US of A this is.

Leonard, it's my understanding that the Executive West was already booked for the time slot that Mark wanted for the Qlympics. Whether he originally wanted to have the event in August/September (As were last year's U.S.Open 1P and BCAPL events), I couldn't say. But it must be difficult to get a venue which is large enough to hold dozens of pool tables and attendees, AND offer a decent deal. I suspect the Clarion was a great choice.

Doc

The Clarion is actually about 5-10 minutes from my house...depending on the traffic. I have never been inside, but it looks pretty nice. There are lots of things real close by for eating and shopping. I will be around the tournament quite a bit. Look for me and introduce yourselves and I will help you navigate the area in any way I can. I would love to meet you all.

Clarion

The Clarion has a much larger convention facility than the Executive West has. However, it has fewer rooms. (About 400)

This was one that had open days that we could work with. I think you will find it is a nice venue and they are willing to work with all of us "pool players".

As Bomber said, there are all kinds of restuarants and other items in the immediate area.

Shane and Earl will be playing after they come back from WPC in Manilla. They will be back a couple of days before the match to compensate for jet lag.
