U.S. Open Tidbits and Trivia

In reading the U.S. Open website, I discovered something of interest:
The field is limited to 256 Players. Entry is $500.00, Added Monies is either $50,000.00 or $72,000.00 with full field of 256.

If this field fills up, an extra $22,000 added will be mighty sweet. It's at 227 players now and is still climbing. MANY Open "regulars" are still not in. I predict a full field, at least I hope so. :p

In an effort to learn more about the history of the U.S. Open, I would be interested to hear from others on this thread. :)

Here's my contribution, and the veteran AzBilliard readers will know the answer to this one.

WHO is the youngest and oldest player to have won the U.S. Open title since it has been held in Virginia?

There's an august body of posters on this forum, so please add to the thread. Any trivia and tidbits are welcome! :)

I will take a wild guess ...

Not knowing my US Open history well at all,

I will venture out and say the youngest was Nick Varner
and oldest is Buddy Hall. (just wild guessing here).

Back-to-back U.S. Open wins

Most people know that Earl Strickland has won five U.S. Open championships, a feat nobody has and may NEVER accomplish.

WHO won the U.S. Open back to back, 2 years in a row?

Nicknames in pool have been occurring ever since I can remember.

Each of the U.S. Open champions have been fondly known by the below-referenced nicknames. Some are easy; some are not! Can you name all of them? :D

The Scorpion
Rebel
The Rifleman
Captain Hook
The Kentucky Colonel
The Magician
Rocket
The Miz
The Kaiser
Prince of Pool
Praise the Lord
Spanish Mike
Young Hoppe
St. Louis Louie
Handsome
The Pearl
Little David
Captain Hook

Did they ever come up with a nickname for the 2004 U.S. Open Champion Gabe Open?

Rebel--Reed Pierce
Little David--David Howard
St Louis Louie--Louie Roberts
Young Hoppe--Allan Hopkins

Some worthless knowledge;

Tommy K was the first unseeded player to win the Open. The Open was played in Two pool rooms, Guys and Dolls and The Q-Master...the Lake Wright Quality Inn and the Va. Beach Convention Center. I remember when the girls and the guys both played for titles. Watched some tremendous matches in Norfolk at the Q...a few at the Lake Wright and one memorable match in Va. Beach. ALL of them had Earl in them!!!

Good guess, but not correct! :p

Nick Varner was born 5/15/1948 and won the U.S. Open in 1989, making him 41 for his FIRST Open title.

Buddy Hall -- God bless him! -- was born in 1945 and won his first U.S. Open in 1991. He was 46 years old when he won his first U.S. Open championship.

Both players won the U.S. Open twice.

TKennedy & MLebron?

You're half right and half wrong! ;)

Tommy Kennedy, born February 7, 1965, won the U.S. Open in 1992, which would have made him 27 years old when he snatched this prestigious title.

Spanish Mike Lebron was 54 years old when he won the U.S. Open, making him the oldest living legend in the history of the U.S. Open to snatch the title. :)

Mike Sigel won the U.S. Open in 1976, 1980, and 1983. Born in 1953 -- I don't know what date -- he may have been 23 years old.

Earl Strickland, a five-time U.S. Open champion, won his first title in 1984. Born June 8, 1961, The Pearl shined brightly at a very young 23 years of age.

Anybody who knows when Mike Sigel was born, this will provide the answer as to who was the YOUNGEST U.S. Open champion. It's between Sigel and Strickland.

You all collectively got EVERYBODY except "Handsome."

Though most know him as "Hippy Jimmy" Reid, he was fondly labeled as Jimmy "Handsome" Reid for his good looks when he won the U.S. Open in 1985.

That's very interesting tidbits and trivia, Voodoo Daddy! :)

Tommy Kennedy is one of the friendliest players on the face of the earth. He's got those smiling eyes and an infectious laugh. He is, without a doubt, an asset to this game/sport, and I am always happy to see Tommy Kennedy on the tournament trail. He's one of the good guys!

Babyface could defintely work for Gabe but I think Mike Gulyassy is kinda partial to the nickname already bestowed upon him. Hence "Baby's pro shop". ;)

According to the World Championship site, it's Gabe "The Babe" Owen.

See those of you that are going to be at the Open next week! :D:D:D
