Great to see Nick Varners name on the list of players. I hope he is feeling 100%.
IF NICK IS 100% AND PLAYING 90% HE'S 70% TO COME IN THE TOP 2%

Somehow I'm remembering Yogi's quote about "90% of this game being half mental".

Jimmy,
Wasn't it, "90% of this game is mental, the other half is physical"??? Pretty funny either way.

Is Nick really playing, or just listed among the players? Here is a quote from Brady Behrman: "Past Champions get a Free Entry for LIFE. All past champions get listed from day one unless they decide they don't want to play or don't show up." See http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=6879 (the "Mike Sigel in US Open" thread).
I'm sure Nick will be there. I don't think he's ever missed one in the last 28 years. And if I played like Nick I wouldn't miss it either. Nick is the only person ever to win back to back opens

You're probably right and I hope so! And the U.S. Open Web site confirms your assertion about Nick being the only person ever to win back-to-back Opens, even though the current issue of Billiards Digest lists Earl as having done so: "Reyes' win [in 1994] also broke Earl Strickland's chokehold on the U.S. Open title - Strickland had won it two years in a row, and was hoping to take it for a third consecutive time." (In the Yesteryear section, pg. 6.)

Maybe that was it. It's been a long time since I read the quote, and even longer since he said it! ;)

Varner called Frank Owens at the Carolina's Open to say that he wished he was there. (Nick @ Carolina- not Frank @ Nick's!). Nick's comments did not lead me to believe he would be competing soon. :(
