I think MR were caught completely by surprise with the number of applicants. The reality is that a lot of cuesmiths see $500 entry and easy travel as a no brainer to enter a major competition. 2021 was certainly a transitional year. 2022 will be one too, but there are now enough MR events to get a meaningful ranking list for 2023. If an English pool player from the UK or South Africa or elsewhere goes on a good enough run (and there are enough of them in the draw, including Jason Theron who also dabbles in Chinese 8 Ball and knocked Judd Trump out of the US Open, that one of them probably will) in the UK or European Open that they get a top 128 ranking spot then that's a win-win - we need some surprise packages to promote the game. The usual method for arranging seeded players to get in if they want is to allow them some number of days to accept a spot and then either take an open player or ask a lower-ranked player if they want the spot. "Open" is OK to an extent but I don't think you want to give preference to players who know how to use speed dial. I think the top 128 players by whatever ranking system Matchroom would like to use should have a day to enter without mass competition.
But if some spots were held open, I'm not sure why they haven't been taken by the players they were intended for. It has been a few weeks.
It seems like MR intend to have all major events entry free in the near future with top 64 or 128 rankings deternining automatic entries. We will still get to see most of the best players this year deep in the majors and in the invitational events. Fingers crossed that now is when pool realises its potential as a commercial sport. I also think it would be prudent for MR to be generous with wildcards for the top Asian players when travel restrictions are lifted.
