My dad Bobby, 77 y/o, plays there all the time. He can't say enough good things about the place or about John.

PS: My dad is still best friends with Freddy the Beard, so he will not go easy on you when he plays. He plays some suffocating safeties that I know drive a few players crazy !!
 
I stop by there every time I am in Daytona, great place to play and the people are terrific, I even bought the T shirt last time I was there. The tables are great, he runs a nice place. Tom

Senior pool tournament racks up fun, camaraderie

Most of the 19 pool tables at Uncle Waldo's in South Daytona were in use as the 32-year-old billiards establishment recently was host to a pool tournament for members of its senior league.

Prior to the start of the April 22 contest, players gained strength with a meal of steak and shrimp. Afterwards, they made their way to the tables.

As competition began, the place got quiet. Chit-chat was kept to a minimum as players focused on their games. The only sound was the distinctive click of colliding billiard balls.

The games wore on until early evening when Tom Softley emerged as overall winner of the senior event.

Event organizer John Gureckis, aka Uncle Waldo, said he set up the senior league for the love of the game.

"I think it's the greatest game, but one of the toughest to play and to be good at," said Gureckis. He enjoys watching the league members improve throughout season. "Pool is a game of skill. I'm willing to teach anyone who wants to learn."

Senior league player Jim Flynn, 70, of Port Orange said he doesn't necessarily play to be good.

"It's a game that you can play no matter how old you are and you don't have to be that great at it. Plus it's a lot of fun," said Flynn.

The senior league, for those 55 and up, meets at Uncle Waldo's, 2454 South Nova Road, at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The league uses a handicap system, so any skill level can compete.
