I remember hearing this term in the early 70's about a player. I didn't understand it's meaning......'The dude plays unconscious'....

Was/is it a knock or a compliment? Is it a common term?

What does it mean to you, and in what context?

thanks

Compliment. Like saying he's in the zone. Or in dead stroke. Or a hundred other sayings that mean the guy just doesn't miss.

It means the player is in dead stroke. No shot, no position play is too tough -- the player can just get up and dab it with great aplomb.

It relates to how, when you're in dead punch, you can run balls without thinking, without trepidation, and not recall doing it afterwards.

We been saying man or he is unconscious since the 70s and still say it today in baltimore pool rooms, i know i always said it after the other player got very lucky, as if he just rode the 9ball 7 rails into the side pocket, MAN HE IS UNCONSCIOUS! So thats what it means here in Baltimore! LUCKY!

He is unconscious = he doesnt know what he is doing, because he is not conscious!

When you're awake, you are conscious of everything around you & everything you do & don't do on the table.

When you are 'unconscious', it is because God has taken you out of your body & placed you in La La Land for a while so He can play a few games of pool using your body. Hence you are 'unconscious' of what your body is actually doing under the guidence of God.

Then when God has played as much as He wants or has something more important to do, He leaves your body & brings you back in from La La Land & puts you back in your body. Then when you are back in your body you become conscious again with very little or no recollection of what your body did while playing in the 'unconscious' state under the guidence of God. Generally you become conscious again right before you mis a shot.

That opinion may be more appropriate for the NPR forum, however the physical activity is playing pool.

Another way of saying it that might be more applicabale for this forum is your mind asks your brain if it can take over for a while since you will just be playing pool. Your brain says. 'sure I'll just take a little nap'. From the time your brain falls asleep, you play 'unconscious' at the control of your subconscious mind. Then at some point your brain wakes up & gets jealous of all the amazing things that your subconscious mind is allowing your body to do & says, 'okay, that's enough, I'm back'. At that point you become conscious again & usually mis the next shot & can hardly remember any of the good stuff you did while your brain was asleep. Sort of like dreaming where you can remember a bit here & a piece there but not anywhere near the whole thing.

So when someone says that one is playng 'unconscious' it means they are playing brain 'dead' or in 'dead stroke'.

I hope one of these opinions is acceptable.

Regards &

When someone says "He couldnt Fade Shanes break"........its the same as saying "Overcome"..... Or "He couldnt fade the 7 pack that SHane just ran"- unable to overcome:)

It was similar to having sex with my first wife. I must be out of my mind for doing this, and I hope I don't have to do it again.

There is the conscious and unconscious mind. The conscious mind makes all the decisions on planning the shot or telling you how to do it. The unconscious mind executes them. The very first time you held a cue the conscious mind guided you through every portion of the shot start to finish.

As repetitions start to happen to mind says I've done this before and sort of writes it to hardcode. You no longer need instruction from the conscious and the unconscious executes it on its own.

Have you ever drove home from work and not even remember driving the trip home? That was the unconscious that was hardcoded in to execute that repetitious drive.

So in essence playing unconscious was all about that player doing nothing but executing. It is a very high compliment!
