Does anyone know and willing to share the tpi of the uniloc QR pin, the thread that engages the insert? I was asked to build some joint protectors and would like to build them from scratch and not buy cheap protectors and use those as a base. PM me if that is better.

Wrong thread

I think the question is what is the thread between pin and insert so he can make thread protectors.

It is quite hard to measure, I tried!

I did make some on my cnc lathe.

Will see if I still have the program and let you know if I find it.

I tried to make those a while back, in Black Delrin.
I think I used a 3/8" x 11 TPI
Internal Threads in the QR Insert is so short, hard to get a good "feel" to know exact.
Could be a 11 1/2 TPI :embarrassed2:

I was fussing around the pin with a Thread Pitch gauge, but, still, hard to get the exact fit. So strange.
Only got about 3 threads to "work with"..

The Thread's OD/Major is .367ish, flat...
P.M. me if you need other dimensions, if you want to.
I am not a cuemaker.
I have a 3/8" modified 11 1/2 Tap somewhere , too. Could not find it.
I think i used the 11 thread in the Black Delrin Fit-up Piece in the Photo.

Note: I left the photos large, so, you can see the pin if you don't have one.

Thanks Alton, I tried to measure and it looked like a 3/8-14 but that didn't work. I will try the 3/8-11 on an insert. I hate these 'bastard' types....Predator is always a PIA....!
 
Specs

It is a very unusual thread, is not a perfect match in Imperial or Metric.

I made mine .368 diameter and 11.5 TPI.

This is not perfect, but works quite well.

what happens if you clamp 2, 1" long, 1/16" dowel pins parallel in the 2 full threads, then measure across the ends with a micrometer, and subtract one dowel diameter?
I'd measure the pins at both ends and split the difference, then subtract the dowel dia.

Be sure they are not twisted. Use a flat face clamp or machinist clamp, or clamp to a wide parallel.

This won't be perfect because the pins will lay in the threads at the thread angle, not normal to the axis. But the error should be very small.

smt <---- knows nothing about that type joint but sometimes has to figure out weird threads for machining parts or making a tap.

I really do not do the QR in Delrin.
I was just fussing around at that time.
For just JP's that covers /protects the Pilot,
the loosely fitting 3/8" 11 seem to grab on well.
I would not recommend doing it for real stuff. :)

When I was doing the Cognocentis for Joe,
The Tap had MODIFIED MAJOR etched on it..

Also, just 2 wires, not 3 as the method you quoted requires

There are only 2 complete threads on that pin. So the simple stone-axe shop way i see to measure the tpi fairly accurately from that alone, would be to lay 2 pins side by side in the valleys, clamp them without twist, and measure over the ends of the pins, sticking out each side of the clamp. Both pins are resting on one, flat jaw of the clamp. not on opposite sides.

Assuming no one has an optical comparator, CMM, or other similar device. :smile:

I like to use spring dividers (or calipers depending on the job) then a pocket comparator (I have an old Bell & Howell) for these funny small measuring jobs ... a 5x eye loupe comes in handy too :). Sometimes the comparator can be placed directly on the item to be measured but for these threads I might set then measure dividers.

Dave, there's a lot of merit to that.
I have a handful of those pointy Starrett spring clamp dividers, 2 sizes.
& a Pica/print type desk loupe.
When young, i could see a .001" close up!

Had another round of eye surgery on Tuesday, still can't see close up.
That may be part of the reason my methods gradually evolved to "hard" systems for work with close up details. :(

I have no idea what it is.
I just did what I did with what I had.
The 3/8" x 10 and 12 did not fit as good as the 11 thread, but,
I was only doing " The science of trial and error/ hit or miss"...
It's the secret to my success. :smile:

And, only had that pin and Brass insert to use as samples/guides.

The other time I seen the 3/8" 10 ACME in cues, was on some
TIM SCRUGG's cues.
