Hello:
Does anyone know what ferrule and tip they use on the universal shaft. I have to replace a cracked ferrule and guy would like the same that was on it? Also is it a threaded ferrule or not.
Thanks
Ron

I have 2 Universal Smart Shafts and I believe the ferrules are proprietary material. Tip, I believe is Moori on the LS and Triangle on the RS version.

EDIT TO ADD:
HME Ferrule for improved accuracy: This remarkable ferrule – specially designed for the Universal SmartShaft – is made from an advanced thermoplastic material that flexes slightly on impact, further reducing deflection and vibration, and providing added accuracy.

Better yet, unlike other ferrules, the HME has the unique ability to resist chalk, moisture, and discoloration for a long time. It’s also unique in that it won’t melt when placed on a lathe for cleaning – something no other technology ferrule can say.

Moori tips bring better ball control: These high-grade layered leather tips provide better ball control. While most cue makers charge extra for a Moori, they’re standard on the (LS) Universal SmartShaft.

The LS and RS both use a material called XTC. I think Atlas used to sell it awhile ago, but I don't know of any source of it currently. The ferrule design is quite different from the LS to the RS. The LS is a 7/8" sleeved ferrule with a 3/8" tenon. The tenon has an inner core of maple and an outer core of some kind of cork like material. Never had to replace the ferrule on this, so not sure how that material is to work with. The RS is a standard 1" capped and threaded ferrule. Tip on the LS is a Moori M and the RS is a triangle.

My testing of XTC is that it is quite lightweight (low deflection), very white in color, stays clean and polishes very nicely. The hit is OK, sounds a little funny on off center hits. The most similar materials I can find are the Porper ferrule (which very well could be rebranded XTC, it is very very similar). Also Titan.

I might have a couple of inches left of the XTC material, I sent some out, and I'm pretty sure I have a little left. It may take me a day or two to check for you, as my shop is in storage.

I took a quick look, and I can't readily find it. I won't be putting things back together for at least 2 months, probably more, and I reall don't want to dig everything out to find it.

Sorry,
Rodney

We just did a replacement. THere isn't that much ferrule material on the uncapped LS, so you can pretty much use whatever you'd like and be fine. We drilled out a piece of old Micarta and it works fine. Any other modern, non ivory material should do fine.

ferule replacement

The ferules are not threaded on. Joe Porper sells some threaded ferules that are very close to what is on a Smartshaft. I have machined these ferules to replace the cracked ones on the Smartshaft and they seem to hold up rather well and I haven't had any customer complain about any change in the hit.
