Relatively unknown cue makers who SHOULD be known!

I got a guy here in my town by the name of Brian McCosh who makes really great cues. He doesnt use any cnc and even applies old school 2 part poxy finish by hand!! He doesnt do complicated inlays at all, he prefers to build merry widow/pj cues with complementing ringwork and focus solely on the cue's performance. His cues outperform some of the best customs out there! And if I can borrow a popular phrase from Anitokid " AND I KID YOU NOT! " he made me my first custom cue as well as for a lot of other players in my area. The balance no matter what the weight is perfect! Not foward or at the butt, it's just right! Only thing that sucks is that he isnt listed in the blue books and he makes VERY FEW cues a year, if I'm not mistaken hes only made 2-3 in the past year!? He really gives time to let the wood settle after each turn to ensure no warping. His shafts are second to none! Check out the following pics and you tell me!

Eddie Farris

In the heart of America, there resides a lone cue maker with old world techniques relying on a totally solo operation and he is known for his solid playing shafts and incredibly perfect points. For those of you who are familiar with the more common names, Scruggs, Szamboti, Janes, Stroud, Gutierrez, Mottey, Franklin, Kersenbrock, this man deserves some recognition right up there with the likes of these names. For anyone who has ever owned an Eddie Farris cue, you will know what I'm talking about. This man is a real master of cue making residing in the Tulsa area. Most of the 'players' who seek out a cue to stick with for a long period of time seek out Eddie Farris. I'm talking about the local boys like Brian Jones, Richard Pierce, Jeff Melton, David Strawn, myself, even Buddy Hall all own and play with an Eddie Farris cue.

He is probably not well known across the U.S. and in fact you will probably recognize the name JWPetree more so that Eddie just for the simple fact that Eddie is up in his fifties and doesn't spend time on the computer like the younger generation. Well, I must say that I will be the one to stand up for Eddie's work and applaud. I am a fan for life and hope anyone else out there who gets a chance to own a Farris someday will not pass that chance up, cause you will need to look no further if you're wanting a simple, yet jam up playing cue.

He is in the Blue Book and makes probably less than 20 cues per year. I want to let the people out there know an exact quote Buddy Hall told me. He said, "Eddie's the best in the world when it comes to shafts!" And that ain't no lie.

i actually ran into some guy here that's from Tulsa. he had a eddie farris cue. great looking woods
 
Unknown Cue Maker Who Should be Known

Greg Sowder of Sowder Cues (Vancouver, WA) makes cues the old way. He takes about 2 1/2 years to make a cue all by hand. He turns down the butt and shaft a little and lets them sit for two or three months before he turns them down again. He continues this process for about 2 years. He doesn't use any chemicals or stablizers of any kind. Everything is done by hand. He makes maybe 10 cues a year. Every cue is one of kind. Need I say more?

There are two of them that I say are gaining more and more exposure and for good reason as they make great looking an great playing cues.

The answer to the OPs question is in the numbers. If a builder is only making 2-3 cues a year or even 10 as was also stated, they are obviously doing it as a hobby. Not knocking their talents whatsoever but they probably don't want any more exposure than what they already have. If they did, they'd be building more cues.
Please consider also what would happen if they suddenly received 200 orders to build cues.

But in my friends case, he'd like to push out a lot of the cues he has made thus far. Hasnt sold them all cuz quite frankly no one outside of our tri county knows of his cues. He's not listed in the bluebook or our yellowbook for that matter,he doesnt go to trade shows or tournaments and the guy definitely is computer handicap. As far as if he received orders for 200+ cues...then I guess they all are gonna have to wait a very long time to get thier cues done. Lol. In some cases guys do it for a hobby and in other cases they do it as both a hobby and a business but just need a little help in getting thier name out there so that they CAN add to thier work load.

He's a retired road player turned cuemaker. The vast majority of his work are simple traditional spliced point cues. Every one I have tried plays out of this world. He is a well kept secret with small production numbers. I have two cues being finished and will post pics later in the Gallery.

I guess I can't fault your exuberance. But, there's a bit of naivete' in your posts, IMO. And I kid you not.

Unfortunatley it was just a hobby and he is no longer making cues.

Maybe someday if the market picks up he can start up again?

He makes a nice hitting cue.

It sounds like an opportunity for you, or whoever, to be an agent for this guy. You apparently know how to move a mouse and AZB is a pretty good place to get exposure. Post a few pics in the 'Cue Gallery' or the 'For Sale' section and see what type of response you get. Granted there's a tremendous amount of competition out there but that's just the nature of the beast. Who knows, he might move some of his inventory.
