Unscrewed his cue after the 526th

I reciently read an article on AZ Billiards about Jason Shaw’s amazing run of 714. Early on in the article Mosconi’s run of 526 was referenced with the phrase ”after pocketing the 526th ball the great Mosconi unscrewed his cue and called it a day”. This falsehood has become to be known as untrue as even Mosconi himself finally admitted that he missed the 527th ball on page 167 of his autobiography entitled ’Willies Game’. In the book Mosconi says “ I finally missed a difficult cut shot but by that time I was weary,”.

One of the regular forum contributors even said that he saw Mosconi setting up the missed shot at one of his exhibitions years ago.
I thought this myth was put to bed long ago!

John Schmidt was on a podcast and joked about his 627th shot. IIRC, he missed a combo to end his run. He said in hindsight he should have just raked the balls before shooting it and said something like “that’s good enough”.

Yeah, the unscrewed thing was on his 589 after making the break. Willie confused two different runs.

Willie did. He was interviewed about his 526 run (there’s a Youtube video), and it was clear he was talking about his 589 with Ursitti and not the 526.
Willie on many occasions when being interviewed and asked how his run of 526 ended he said that he quit, said he was tired. His book tells a different story,

i would like to see players run balls without a LD shaft similar to what willie used or use a table with tighter pockets than those used on standard Brunswick tables.

top players will run just as many balls regardless of shaft type.

If you want the shaft to be similar to Willie's, why not also let them run it on an 8 foot table with big pockets like Willie's?

The only time I almost broke and ran a rack of 9ball I did the same thing. Made the 8, got perfect on the 9, unscrewed and walked away.
