First thing, there is a stream and the tournament is fixing to get underway, Calcutta is completed.

Although well over 64 players had committed to coming the turn out for this first event is a little light, between forty and fifty players. Being in the heart of Acadiana(Cajun country) it is just a given that the folks there know how to pass a good time. Also a given where there is a good time and pool you are almost sure to find Scotty Townsend. He is there, took the mini tournament last night. There was a rumor some guy from AZB named JoeyA took second. BoraDriver is there also, not sure if he played last night though.

Some of the players from Louisiana include Chris Miller the owner of White Diamond Billiards in Lafayette, Mike Black from Baton Rouge way, and the usual crowd of strong players. Texas supplied Doug Young and David Parker, no doubt some more players.

Emerald is spacious, fifteen thousand square feet of pool room plus five thousand feet of bingo hall and more square footage of storage. Lots of room to grow! The place is very clean according to the report I received. As would be expected in South Louisiana the food is already getting excellent comments.

Calcutta prices were a little low this first time out. Scotty could be had for under a thousand and I think he was top price. All I know for now, going check the feed!

Every time i hear New Iberia i think of Burke.
Own every thing he wrote.
Be really cool if he showed to sweat.

What is the exact Ustream channel name. I can get this on my mobile, on Ustream, if I have the right name.

. . . and PT109 I have read a ton of Burke's myself but not all I have to admit. However, I have played pool at Tee Neg's back when it was still named Tee Neg's, danced and picked up girls at Slicks, ate a ton of times at the original Mulatte's although I liked Las's better. Hung out and ran that country from my high school years to my mid-twenties and fished the area hard for many years too.

That's too cool Tee Neg's was a real place. You might not be able to get away with giving something that name these days. Offtopic rambling - I've read all of Burke's stuff and it never lets you down. Those who dig him might also look for Johnathon King's work. A little further south, the Everglades, and a little less old fashioned.

Real Place, Real Person

Tee Neg was probably in his fifties when I went there, I don't really remember. Burke described the place and Tee Neg pretty accurately. Cypremont Point is very real too, most of the background he provides is, although he obviously changes a name or adds a plantation or something when the book reflects badly on what he is writing about. I think I used to fish out of his boat launch a lot of the time, can't remember the name but obviously he "borrowed" the home and business for his setting.

Some of the names and places are so thinly veiled that those familiar with them recognize them, some I don't know if they are completely made up or I don't recognize them. A lot of the stranger things happened, like re-electing a sheriff while he was serving time and the same congressional district electing David Duke and then a black man for their next representative. Think it was Jefferson, the guy that got caught with $90,000 of cold cash in his deep freezer!

One more thing, the stories he tells about Angola Prison Farm, if they aren't true they aren't far from it and a lot worse happened there sometimes. It might not have been the toughest prison in the nation to serve time in 50-60 years ago, then again it might have been! I had friends and family on both sides of the bars.

I love South Louisiana although there are times I'm not sure why.

I'll try Jonathon King

Thanks for posting this, I just ran across it.
We're in the final 4 right now
Scotty T vs Joey Barnes (currently 3-2 scotty)
on the losers side is David Parker and Cliff Tyler (4-4 right now)

Auction today brought over 7k for the first and just a little over 1k for the 2nd, tournament brought 1760 and Keith Hulin added 1k.

We did expect more in the calcutta, as well as turn out, but we're looking forward to the next event at Emerald Billiards.

For those of you who attended, we'd love your feedback on how the tournament went and the calcutta, please email me at josh@fairgameclothing.com

thanks!

The holiday weekend might have worked against you

Josh,

You can thank JoeyA for the thread. He is the one that called me with the update.

The holiday weekend might have worked against you in some respects with some of the big gamblers and some players involved in family activities. Not that the turnout and Calcutta was bad but we do hope for a monster turnout and Calcutta every time. Sounds like there was still around $10,000 in the total purse, not shabby at all for a one day event!

Taking care of things while other folks are out of town kept me away from this tournament but hopefully I'll make the next one.

I met JoeyA, but because of everything going on, I didnt have a ton of time to chat, which stinks, because I was hoping to have some hang out time down there. Should be able to next time.
Joey, pleasur meeting you, hope to see you at another event soon!
