Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Million dollar question....How did Randy Hansen feel the weekend went and will he be interested in doing something again anytime soon or will he not be interested for 6-12 months...?

There was some mad action converged on Des Moines this weekend. At one time there was 7 of the 8 Diamond 9fts going with One Hole match ups!

Everyone got played. Bigtruck even mixed it up with The Rookie after the stream.

The Rookie, aka Joe "The Mayers" of Des Moines was the minister of who's who for the show this weekend and did some very good commentary! Thanks buddy.

Mark it down. Truck loves Iowa! Great poolroom and lots of great people. Mikey Frost IS the man. Never waits for action. He makes it happen. Cool dude.

Thanks to Randy Hansen and the awesome staff at Big Dog Billiards. Good room. Hope to make it back sometime soon.

Ray

Ray, thanks for running the stream, glad you had fun and look forward to the next one.

Thanks Ray, tell Brandon to check his PM, it was a good tourney in my eyes and def a fun time.

I could attempt to summarize it all but I would do it no justice. I went $440 in the hole and somehow escaped $150 loser to Perron Jr. Thank god these kids are brave enough to play the 9 ball ghost without ball in hand these days.

I wish we had more tourneys like that it was definitely a ton of fun, I needed a full day of recovery afterwards. I did end the weekend about $300 in the hole after a $1500 slide lol. It happens though sometimes you lose.

Did any of the locals cash in either event?

I would think that since they paid 25% of the field some locals cashed. I talked to Kelly Stoutenberg last night and he said he lost 9-6 to Barracks which is a tough match. Considering all the other tournaments that were going on at this same time period as ours I think it was a solid showing of people.

I spoke with Randy before I headed out of town. There were a lot of complaints but nothing that couldn't be corrected. He seemed perceptive to having the tournament again. IMO, here are the three things that need to be addressed to have a really good tournament. One, have a physical board in which the players can see the draw, etc. The can still use the computer just transfer the info over to the board. Two, schedule the match times. That way everyone knows when they are playing. Three, begin the one pocket earlier on Friday and play more matches. Get the one pocket down to two players by Saturday. I told Randy my ideas and he seemed receptive.

This was a nice tournament and I thanked Randy for having it. Everyone was very friendly and Big Dogs is a great environment. I look forward to coming back and playing again.

Darryl...thanks for the reply and some good suggestions. Like I had mentioned before talking to Beau's friend, starting matches and calcuttas on time makes for a smoother tournament. The physical board and scheduled match times should be a no brainer, I agree completely. Since the one pocket matches took longer it did delay some of the nine ball so another good suggestion there. I believe one match went about 3-4 hours if I remember right? I am glad Randy was receptive on it...with some corrections and better advertising and timing in relation to other tournaments being scheduled I think we can make it bigger next time. About 64 in 9 ball might not seem that big, but considering the other tournaments going on in the surrounding area and the quality of players that did show up to produce an over 4K calcutta...that's not too bad!

LOL I read a thread just now about the tourney in Centralia, there were only about 20 people that went to play and 8 of them were trying to steal double lol. They had a really strong 20 player tourney that I bet that owner never has again.

Darryl you beat both of my horses in the 9 ball at one point so I hate you, jk hell of a tourney, you shot like a champion.

Thanks Matt. I figured some would cash, just hoping someone can post details of names & places they finished. Inquiring minds want to know. :) I'm really bummed that I couldn't make it out to support the tourney, but it simply wasn't in the cards this time. So, I'm left with living vicariously through all of you lucky dogs that were able to participate. Sounds like it was a pretty good tourney....hopefully they will have another one.

It seemed like the play got screwed up because they were trying to schedule big matches for the stream. Which is understandable to a point, but on the other hand not. They were holding up 9ball matches because they wanted them to get on the stream after the one pocket match was finished streaming. A couple of Jesse Engle's matches were like 3 hours...I say if you can play your match, play it.

Mike I still owe you $25...You can add that to your overall tally....:p

FYI.... Jason Chance said he would add some BIG money the next time if he could dictate a few conditions on how the tournament gets run. Like I said, I had an absolute blast this weekend, and am ready to do it again. Next time I would like to match up with someone.

I loved how Chance, streaming live, called out any pro in the country to come and play him some one hole.

Yeah, I should have got more involved in the stream matches. Usually you just pick from what 2 or 3 are up now. The One Hole length did throw a kink in some of the scheduling.

I like the idea of a paper bracket along with the computer. I use ingenlabs software, which times the matches. Very useful.

Nice comments Darryl. All you local Des Moines players need to thank Big Dogs for doing this, and let Randy know you'll drum up local support for the next one.

And... you guys need to make travel plans now for the next big tournament in Fargo.

$2500 added 8-ball
$500 added 9-ball

I wasn't referring to you Ray, nor am I blaming anyone. I just think that it's the nature of the beast sometimes. I think having you there was a blast. You and Brandon are welcome back anytime!

Enough with the small talk. Lets here about all the action and "non-action" of the weekend! Who won big? Who woofed the most? Who put their money where their pie hole is?

Sounded like a strong field showed up. My suggestion to get more "local players" would have been to handicap the 9 ball if you would like to get more numbers. I know handicapping tournaments with out-of-towners is difficult. Maybe have 2 levels? Open and Masters? Pay the masters tourney more to divert someone playing under their skill?
If I hadn't already scheduled our monthly poker tournament 1.5 months ahead of time, I would have been there irregardless.

As a suggestion for the stream, is it possible to do a ticker scroll thing at the bottom of the screen to update post, present and past matches? Also have an on-line tournament board with payout and calcutta money?? And one more suggestion, an above, overhead table camera angle?

Big Truck, thanks for the stream. The quality from the stream looked great on my Incredible Droid phone as well as the sound. It kept me in touch while we played poker!

I broke even on my match bets...won on the one hole Shuff/Beau match and lost on the Chance/Lutman match after Chance was up 2-0 . I only had one person ask me to gamble (Donny F), but he was asking anyone and everyone. I was there with a buddy to sweat some matches so I politely declined. It doesn't sound like there was much big action. I did hear of a doubles match betwen Shuff/Bowman vs Engle/Lutman in one hole possibly?? Someone else will have to relay how that went down.

It doesn't sound like there was much big action.

I am not sure what people consider big. There were someone in action almost every hour Dogs was open.($20 a game to $1000 sets)

Other people were trying to match up, sometimes it just doesn't happen. A few of the out of towners could have matched but didn't for whatever reason. For sure a couple of locals could have gotten in a game, as i witnessed several get asked and they declined. Not saying people have to match up, but everyone could have gotten played by someone.

Randy was awesome staying open sunday night til 8am monday morning ! ! ! :D

That's pretty cool there - staying open till 8.

The atmosphere was very cool. Lots of people, lots of action, lots of tournament stuff going on. The parking lot was fuller (Overflow) than I have ever seen it. Can't imagine it wasn't a busy weekend. Mikey himself probably ran them out of Goose.

Very enjoyable and I hope to get in on the next one.
