Update on the Des Moines pool scene

I will also be giving a $100 bonus out of my own pocket to the first person to run 5 banks. I'll see if I can get Big Dogs to add anything to the overall pot as well.

Why the $15 tour fee? I thought it was only a Big Dog tournament? I guess I don't understand.

Maybe I will have to watch again... :-(

So, what is stopping us from not using the tour? What did it add? From what I can tell only about $400 or so was truly added. All of the guaranteed money was covered by the entries, correct? So, are you talking that this tournament will be $60+$15 for entry?

FYI- I don't have a problem with the entry. I play in it for the experience, and to make me a better player. The cash is just a bonus. BUT, I talked to at least 10 people that can't pay that kind of money for a tournament that they have no shot in cashing in(especially before Christmas). If you think about it, for food and drink, some of them will be spending well over $100 for the weekend. To a point I understand, and on the other hand I say MAN UP AND GROW SOME NUTS.

I'm just saying if enough money is TRULY added and along with entry fees, I think we would could easily get into the 90's by lowering the entry by even $15. With more turn out, means more people buying food and drink for the bar, which will most likely have more people come back and play in the next one.

PS- Where were the Cedar Rapids guys? I figured I'd definitely see Hargins there. I suppose it was Deer season though....

I paid 120 total to get in both tourneys, Ate and drank and missed out on one my sons basketball touneys. Cash wise, I spent about 220. Someone please tell me I was not DEAD money so I feel better. I question why I should play in another tourney with that talented of a field. I am not scared of one two or even three big hitters but I was thoroughly outmatched at this last tourney. How or why would I encourage others of less skill than me to play?

If the money is just recreation money (as it probably should be, not the rent) then it's just the cost of admission. How much to have a good time.

I don't even blanch at donating at the local tournaments. The price is right.

I will have some pause at throwing almost $75 into a hole, just to play two sets of 9/10 whatever-ball. And with $15 of it going to a tourny - just for the privilege of playing in it. --- For the record, I have paid tournament card fee's before -- but never liked it. Especially when I won't be participating in the whole 'year's tournaments.

So - again I am balancing how much I really want to play vs how much it costs (both financial and opportunity) $75 tips the scales.

As far as nutting up and playing the big boys -- please. I know enough about my game and don't have many delusions of grandeur. Its about brains, not balls. Pool players usually model having too much of one and not enough of the other...

Whatever -- i'm not so excited anymore. I swear this game will drive me to gambling sooner or later. League's boring, the tournaments getting overpriced and hard to find the time to play/commit. Gambling is about the only thing that is left where i can control the schedule and get by for a reasonable amount of money.

That is not what I mean. I'm not calling anyone out.

So, is anyone going to answer my question? What is the benefit of having the MPA sponsor? What did it add, other than me adding to it??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Troy...... Your not dead money...you are live and kicking money....:p

If the entry stays high, I'm not saying I want to, but the ONLY way to get more of a turn out is to handicap it. Even if you do that in a long race it still favors the better player.

I know you weren't -- but that is the spin everyone puts on playing better tournament competition -- LOL There is only one guy in a tournament, EVER, that stopped to point my game in the right direction. As he was caving my brains in, I might add.

I, too, wonder what the benefit was to having MPA sponsorship, other than to pad the tournament.

If Troy is in bad, I should be at home.

I wouldn't mind a handicapp, but like Bruce - I think the better player usually still wins, unless someone is under handicapped and then the drama starts....

I guess I will leave the dates open, if i got nothing better to do....

I'm just saying, a lot of the "better" players don't want a handicapped tournament, but every time they gamble they give up weight anyway....:scratchhead:.... So, you don't want to handicap our race to nine, but if we were gambling you'd spot me a few games? WTF? They shouldn't care about a handicapped tournament because in a race to 9 they should still win, plus it will bring in more entry fees which in turn bring in more payout.

I know what your saying. $75 is to steep when the field is this strong. The average player doesn't have a chance of even getting their money back. I was hoping big dogs would keep the price around $50 or $60. I still think that would draw more players and in turn make the bar more money. For the guys who say $75 is cheap why don't they start a tournament for the big boys with a $100 entery winner takes all. That would be something to see.

The only time handicapping becomes an issue is when you have a TD that has his horses under-rated so he can steal the tournament.

Have a "council" of neutral people to determine the handicaps and it a winner (maybe retired players that know everyone). I have also had success by polling the players at my player meetings.
