Update on the Des Moines pool scene

soooooo... There may be a chance that they can't even get a license ?? Why would you ever sink the kind of money into a place that they're supposedly" doing, without having your license up front ?

Just doesn't make sense. I can now see why it's taking so long to open.

HaHa, I remember when they were closing in Sep. They thought they could close one day, open at the new location the next.. Wow. what incompetence.

just like you said, they thought they could close and move in one day, makes sense that they would make such an assumption as to possibly thinking either the same license would transfer with them, or that it would be easy to get lol

I'm not laughing at this unnecessary problem.

Why are you guys?

Jeff Livingston

I am laughing because I find it humorous that as a business they dropped the ball big time! It's comparable to watching a player follow the 8 ball in, it sucks for them, but at the same time such a rookie mistake. ;)

I'd say it's more like the 8 is traveling towards the pocket and someone grabs it and says, "I win; You lose!"

I want the pool hall open.

Why does anyone have to pay to get a permission slip to sell anything?

Jeff Livingston

I did say I was done in this thread but I'd like to state one fact.

Big Dogs is one of the best pool rooms to play in the entire country. I've been to 95% of the so called best pool rooms and big dogs was way better. No pool rooms in texas are even within the 6out of dogs.

Thats the old dogs too, the new one looks like it's gonna be better. I look forward to stopping in and checking it out some time. There are good players and people in des moines and it sucks theres mostly just valleys to play on. Hope yall get a good place to play back. Hopefully this time they have some big tourneys. Theres no reason big dogs shouldn't be hosting a white diamonds like tourney. White diamonds is the size of stix ankeny with less tables by the way for comparison sake.

I'm sure they'll get the paper work worked out. If thats the real problem their having. If you stopped by the new place and saw the work that they have done you'd stuff your "supposedly'' where it belongs. I'm with Jeff. I don't see anything funny about them not being able to open. One thing I do know for sure is they really missed the boat by being closed this winter. I also agree with Mikey about Big Dogs being top notch. I hope them not being open this long has given a few locals a taste of what it would be like if it were gone for good. So that when it does open they come out and support it.

Definitely looking forward to the opening and cannot wait to get back on some real tables

Big Dogs will open soon

This thread comes up with some good drama. Closing Big Dogs one day opening the next??? Using alcohol lic from the owner of the old building and not being able to transfer or get a new lic. If you check the names on the license the owners of Dogs are on the license. The license was secured before the work was started, this project is not our first billiard center opening although the most extensive.

True we have run into some hurdles but to build a hall from scratch it takes time. To save start up costs and to be able to make Dogs a 1st class hall we have done most of the work ourselves and knew it was going to take time. Des Moines has one of the best pool playing communities in the country and as Mr Frost has stated its hard to find a good pool hall! We have added a cafe to be run by Darold from the Norwood Inn a very respected and talented food person for many years in the area, a party room for special events, a few 9fts and given the tournament and league players more room to enjoy this crazy game we all love.

Since we have done the work ourselves we were able to keep the costs down and are able to pass the savings onto you the customer; ie unlimited pool, VIP memberships, and specials on drinks and supplies. Big Dogs will be open soon, it actually looks like a pool hall again. We look forward to serving you for years to come. We wanted to purchase the building and not run into the problem of the building being sold and having to move again! We are very excited to open and we know it has taken time more time than then it should have but we are only human. A special thanks to the help we have received from the locals who have donated their time and never asked for a penny, your help is appreciated will be remembered!

I will post the opening date when I know it, but it will be soon. We are planning to run a Free grand opening tournament and VIP event shortly after opening to break in the new joint. We appreciate your past business and look forward to making Big Dogs one of the best halls in the country. Thanks for taking the time to read this post but I need to get back to work! See you soon! By the way anybody interested in applying for work or know of any qualified people drop me a pm.

Thanks again Marc Oelslager and Randy Hanson Big Dog Billiards

Thank you sir for the update, cant hardly wait to play on some nice tables when I visit the greater DM area. BDB was a nice play before and I hope that same atmosphere will follow to the new place.

I know that we really miss Big Dogs being open.As for people thinking it funny, you must LIKE it at Stix. We played there once, that was one too many times. Marc and Randy are some of the nicest people you could meet. We are both looking forward to being back with all of our friends there,we miss you guys. If you think about it how cool is it that 2 guys from other states come down here to provide us with a really nice pool hall, that no one , since Mc Coy, has provided. Anyway we look forward to seeing everyone there. We only wish we lived closer so we could go there more than once a week. Maybe when we retire, lol. See ya then, Carol and Duane

I love how posting a lol got so much attention? Calm down fellas, and i guess now we know what's going on with it. Myself I hate both Stix locations, tables are too damn close together, the staffing sucks, and I wish my fav tender still worked for Big Dogs, kaitlyn, but she is off in the air force for now :(

Dang

Next time we meet, I'll buy Mikey some Goose if he posts again --- He buys me the next drink if we don't hear from him again in this thread.... BET?:ok:

Now I gotta buy Mikey a drink when he comes back. It was a bad bet anyway -- I knew he couldn't stay away. Good to hear from you again -- finished fleecing Texas yet?:p

Thank Mark - I appreciate the time to put an update on the forum. Looking foward to the big grand opening. Pool just aint been the same.:D

Thanks for taking the time to repond. As you can see we are all anxious to start spending our money in your establishment. I will be happy to eat on site as well. just get this damn thing open already, lol. :)

On a side note on St Paddys day I busted out a can o whoop *ss at stix for a cnote with a bar cue on a couple race to 5s for $50...good times!...had to blow the dust off a bit, but was definitely like riding a bike. Nothing like free drinks to make for a fun weekend.

Woot! What a great day! News that we might actaully have a real pool hall again soon and Mikey Frost back in the thread!

I can't wait to get back to playing on the big diamonds all the time again. Bring your bankrolls boys!

Been away for a while, and haven't played much since I started my new job. I am pleased to see that Big Dogs will be back soon, and look forward to playing again. The only time I have to play is on the weekend, but I don't feel like fighting the crowds at the bars. I can say I'll more than likely be a regular at dogs on the weekends.

So I take the scenic route to Des Moines from St Louis via Lincoln NE. Get to town, check in and head for Dogs. Hmmmm. 650 miles and I'm sitting @ Drake Diner sipping a beer instead of my annual stab @ pocketing balls. Oh well at least I didn't embarrass myself.

Sorry about that... WE miss the place too. Since summer. Hopefully it will be shortly.

Go stare thru the doors at the new place -- maybe they will let you in!

Did ya get the rare-bit burger? My mom loves them from there! I dig the meatloaf sandwich!
