Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Very kind Jon :)

ISPA runs by far the best iowa state tournament. So glad to be a part of it. Payouts were bumped up this year also. $2500 for first, nice ! Compare that to VNEA .... twice as many masters teams and they paid $1450 for 1st, LOL.

Congrats to Mike/Jody/Somphet/Troy/Steve. They played well and won the winners bracket. They were all very respectful in the 2 matches we played.

Our team lost first round to Whiteys team. Came back through and on sunday, beat Jerrod/Dustins team. Then Whiteys team. Then on to Team Unknown. To say there wasn't a little extra fire in us to beat these guys would be a lie. Saying that, i have won state tournaments with Troy/Pet on my team. I consider them friends and good teamates still. I also am very happy and proud that the two dsm master teams finished 1st and 2nd, no matter who ended up where.

Our strategy this weekend which is not common for us was to play Jamie early instead of last. Playing me anchor in the whole hope we don't get there plan. Well it got to me two times, and i got there two times. *phew*

I'm so proud of our team. Also sad because this may be the last go round for us with Jamie living up by waterloo now. We finally after 6 years of trying found a 5th (jon) who fits in with us goofballs. Team chemistry will win you more than you think.

The steak was good. The waitress was terrible. (inside joke)

To Frost....70 dollar winner beotchhh

To Team Unknown: You guys played a great game all weekend long, with the exception of your match with Whiteys team.

To Team Don't Do Things: You also played amazing, and maintained your composure and professionalism throughout the weekend.

To all the other teams and singles players from Des Moines, congrats on your finishes.

Troy, that was such a neat post~ congrats to your son!! I'm sure he will be on cloud 9 all week!!

We need to get our son Carter and your boys together to play some pool. Carter LOVES to play and has a determination for the game that I'm afraid we may have created a monster~ LOL....

I would love to bring them up and let them play it out. Its good for them to play players their own age. I also feel like I have created monsters. lol. Maybe we should try golf, much more class in that sport, you know like, porn stars and pancake waitresses.

Jason~
I agree it's pretty awesome that both Des Moines teams were in the finals, and thanks for giving props to my hubby and his team. That was very classy of you indeed!

LMAO~ for sure!! Besides, it's really hard to fly banners overhead when your stuck in an auditorium.

You'll need that extra carton of cigarettes back in the desert!!!

Valley should have came with note pads and pencils in hand, they could have learned a thing or 2 from this tourney. ISPA is the best run torney in the state of Iowa. We had great playing tables all weekend long and the ISPA staff was great.

Congrats to the DM pool players you guys played well.

I can't believe Mikey hasn't posted about our win in the masters scotch doubles yet!!! Ken told me he created that division mostly because of my continuous whining. :)

All of the DM accomplishments are worthy of a main forum post, rather than buried here in this thread where only Iowan's will read them. You guys took home an awful lot of hardware and bragging rights. And if someone does post out there, don't forget to mention Sabrina's awesome finish in masters singles!

I agree that the ISPA tourny is always well run. According to Dwayne, most of the added money went to the team events this year, which I can't really argue with. I guess I'll have to work harder to get on a team for next year.

Karla I have been asleep since 11PM yesterday only waking up for food and water lol. I was very happy that we won the Masters Division Scotch Doubles as well, let's win it again next year!

DSM area was all over the place. I also heard that in every single division the only team not to get double dipped was the Level 1 Big Dogs team from DSM!!! How crazy is that stat???

I wish Whitey Walker would post on here what happened this weekend with the "classy" Mike Athens! Whitey had every right to be pissed off!! Isn't this game supposed to be a gentlemen's game, or does that go for everyone but Mike Athens?

If people don't think I'm classy for what I say about Mike, I really don't care!!! I never claimed to have any! I give credit where credit is due, and I don't owe him any! I don't care what he thinks about me...in fact I think it's funny that he hates me :) As far as Jody goes, I don't hate him, I just get tired of hearing, from him, how great he is. Some people can talk like that, but they are people like Shane Van Boening!

The situation with Athens and Whitey's team was very unfortunate and really a black eye on the tournament. Bottom line is sometimes the referees do not make the right call and as players we have to say the ref screwed the pooch. Athens was trying to help his team win and at the end of the day, that game didn't matter in the outcome. I wish that never happened because that one incident has seemingly become the talk of the tournament and I don't think Team Unknown cheated to get there, they played good.

As for Whitey and Athens, probably never will see eye to eye on that one but ultimately I doubt it cost them the tourney. The damn ref blew it at the end of the day.

the ref made the right call. You cannot shoot directly through the cue ball when they are that close. Love everybodys comments when they were not there. It was CLEARLY a foul. They were less then a chalks width apart. And anybody that says different didn't have the viewpoint that I did. I was less then 2 feet away and almost on top of the shot. It was a foul. And anybody else would of taken too. It was clearly a foul

When the distance between the cue ball and the object ball is less than the width of a chalk cube, (See Diagram 18) special attention from the referee is required. In such a situation, unless the referee can positively determine a legal shot has been performed, the following guidance may apply: if the cue ball follows through the object ball more than 1/2 ball, it is a foul.

that is rule 2.20 **** JUDGING DOUBLE HITS of the bca rule book

I am going to guess the ref thought the distance was less then the width of a piece of chalk.

And in the end it comes down to honesty and integrity. I think a solution to the problem is to simply play the game over or just do the right thing and let the guy keep shooting. Some people won't put what's right in front of winning! I know that if it was our team, we wouldn't have let that ref cause the issue. Once the ref walked away, we would have made it right! Sometimes a ref makes a bad call, but you can't let a ref's bad call take away your integrity!!!

Definition of Integrity:adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

That is not the spirit of the rule Mike. It is possible to follow a ball that is within a chalks width. It happens all the time at master level and you know that.

I did not see the shot though. All I have to go by is the large number of master players that saw it.

that's the rule black and white. You have to elevate. Everybody knows that or shoot away from it. Really pretty simple.

and you are right it is possible to doit. But you can only positively tell with stop action photos. That is why the rule is written like it is. Very clear cut. You cannot shoot with a level cue when they are that close. Ask any ref on any level. They call it that way every time.

contgrats to the winners. Jason made a great out. Never thought we would make it that far. Who were your open players?

You may be right that a ref will call it that way every time. That is to bail out the refs who can't tell what a good hit looks like. If a ref made a bad hit call on my opponent and I thought the cueball action was consistant with a good hit, then I would overrule the ref.

My question to you is, do you feel he double hit the cueball or did he just foul according to the chalk width follow rule?

Thanks. I feel it was a great tournament for both of our teams. It was a small field but it was not lacking talent.

Jon and I were the open players. I have been one for about 8 years and this was Jon's first year playing. We will both be open next year too. We cashed in the level one 8-ball, but not great.

he hit the ball good. But you can't shoot directly through the balls. So now we pick and choose how we follow the rules? If he would of elevated this would be moot.

the rule is in place to lessen arguments. It is well known and the ref used it to base his decision.

oh and the ref said it was a foul.
