Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Back to the weekend review...I was talking with a few people and they made a really good point. If you beat Athens, Jody, or Randy this weekend, you got moved up! What a joke! And from what people said, Randy made guys feel like sh!t because they were beating him...then had them moved up! Randy sacrificed future and some regular customers for his own advancement in a pool tourney!! Again, what a joke!! Is he broke, or does he need a loan, because this behavior from him hasn't done him any favors in the DSM pool community. Those three guys are all alike! They aren't doing anything to benefit the game of pool in DSM, they are doing everything they can for themselves. GREED!! Can you believe Randy wouldn't buy the pool4u guys some pizza, even though they were streaming this event for basically nothing!! Randy wouldn't buy Frost or Bish a couple drinks for doing the calcutta, but Athens gets free entry!! Athens doesn't do anything for the weekly tournaments in Big Dog's and gets free pool and free pop! Jody gets the same deal, and he doesn't do that much for pool around here. I feel like this is typical Athens and Jody...any way they can cheat to win, they will do it. Randy is not cut out to run a business...he doesn't get that you have to treat your customers good in order for them to want to come back!!

Don't you think IPODs should not be allowed?!! I really think you are a weaker player because you have to use one. And when I say weaker, I mean mentally!

Sorry about the rant, but I have been talking to a few people today that were NOT happy with how they were treated by those three guys. And everyone wonders why the DSM pool scene is a joke...it's because of guys like them!!!

Did Gary Lutman (sp?) get played?

He was waiting on chance, who later called and said he couldn't make it. Was going to wait today in hopes of playing him even in one pocket. He actually played in the tourney and we played for the hot seat. I let him win cuz I could tell he was low on money

First Mike hints at something coming to Big Dogs and Jon says he knows about it to. But neither will talk about it and now this. You guys act like your in grade school. I know something you don't know na na na na.

You are right my apologies for not airing out unofficial plans. So without further wait I'll just tell you what I have heard is in the plans. Don't even know who you are but you sounded interested. I usually like to wait until rumor becomes fact, but in any case here is the rumor.

The rumor is they sold about 12 gold crowns. Pending good sales last weekend the owners were going to meet and decide whether they would be investing back into big dogs. If they do reinvest they will put in 4 more 9ft. diamonds, rearrange the tables to have 16 Diamond bar tables on the adult side. Having 8 9 ft. Diamonds and 16 Diamond bar tables they may plan on running several Olathe Midwest 9-Ball Tour style events with a One pocket tourney and 9-Ball tourney to follow. That's the rumor. Well that's the main part of the rumor, the rest is unimportant, but if that rumor becomes fact I would be impressed.

Thanks for woofing me into telling a rumor, feel better?

I just got caught up on the thread and had fun red repping a guy. I will say that this thread sure is heating up. I talked to Daniel a whole lot since Davenport where he behaved like a "punk" kid. Believe me he's working on it and it's not an overnight process but he has good intentions and if you let him know he offended you he will apologize to you.

Maybe the thread has turned into a bunch of crying. Maybe that's what free speech sounds like. Is Pedro a pro player now? I heard the criteria for being a pro player was all you do for income is play pool...well Donny is a business man why wasn't he a AA player? I'm not even arguing about being an A player because I beat two C players to death and lost to Travis(guy who got moved up while playing Randy because he had a 2 or 3 game lead, he went on to lose the match) and lost to Jamie Baraks pretty damn decisively. So I could have been a Pro or a C player and finished in the same place. Is it a crime for an A player to play good? Is anyone in complete shock and awe when Justin 2 rails a ball in the side? Is anyone totally shocked when Jimmy runs out from nowhere? Jamie gives Daniel the last 3, believe it or not that is a compliment and he played. Anyone remember when Jamie was giving out the Wild 8 and Wild 7 to Athens, Jody, pet, Mikey H. etc... and couldn't get a game....yep that's all back ground info and a case that Daniel was borderline AA player but they let him slide as an A player right? Or is it because he won Hill-Hill and then 5-3 over Jamie Baraks in a match that started off like this Daniel wins cause Jamie MISSED and Daniel cleaned up the rack, Jamie B&R, Daniel B&R, Jamie B&R, Daniel B&R, Jamie B&R, Daniel B&R, and ends with Jamie breaking dry. So was the table leaking and they both played good or was that maybe one of the best matches he's ever played and his reward is what? I think everyone who cashed 9-12th or better probably should have told Daniel good shooting and shook his hand for putting money in their pocket. He got beat 6-1 by Mike Lacy but at least he tried and gave it his best.

Ohhh and not to beat a dead horse but he beat Mike Lacy out of the winners side after he beat Jamie Baraks the first time, how you like his draw? Ohhh and wait if the brackets were drawn correctly should he have had to play Baraks or Lacy in those spots??? Answer is heck no. Who's keeping score anyway?

End of the day it's all a popularity contest and who can do what for who and when. The more you will give the more people will take. You can buy a lot of people around here. I feel like friendships are for sale in a lot of instances. What I am getting at is the more hot air I spew I realize all the more it don't matter none! Normally I don't listen much to Wikki but Eddie has been telling me for the last few weeks about playing for the love of the game, he's onto something. There were two guys playing on a 9 footer on Sunday night and they were hilarious with each other, probably both low D players. I saw real friendship and I just went on home because it's been a while since I've seen that. Your enemies are your enemies and your "friends" are often worse here, it's pathetic.

There was no action this weekend because....no one wants to play until they know they are stealing. There was a guy playing everyone cheap that was horrible but he just felt like playing and the vultures couldnt wait to get on him AFTER they saw he was no good. No one would even try to match up. I couldn't get 8 people to pay $100 for a mini tourney...bottom line if you want action someone has to give up the nuts. I'm also sick of fake gamblers or non pool gamblers that always talk about gambling in pool. You gotta conceed everything and take the worst of it in every direction to get a game where you can win something. Gary Lutman giving Phil 9-6 playing one pocket I tried to bet $200/game on either player...yes either player to get the game going. Couldn't get any action beccause I was trying to steal picking Gary, I think Gary was an underdog in that game I just felt like gambling. I gave people the opportunity to bet however they wanted and still no one would bet. I don't even like to bet on Phil and I would have there. So moral of the story is there was no action because no one would play, I applaud Ryan Cobb for looking for a game and promptly slamming as many beers as possible once he realized there was no action. Unlike the other people who spun their wheels til late night and didn't play anyone. Ryan was smarter than that.

End of rant hope I responded to someones post. Oh and as for that whole calcutta debacle I lost $320 on it not $800 or more like the rumor is. TRAVIS was the best in the calcutta cause he had all of Justin and half of the Co-Champion...SPORTYYYYY! Other guys got to brag on how smart they were for pickin Pedro and teamin up on Randy, I picked Jesse Bowman with the first Blind pic in Olathe before, I also felt really smart that day when he won the tourney undefeated. One small difference we won thousands they won $100s.

Anyway I'm still a bit annoyed and dont much give a ****.

Yep, hes afraid of Gary !

It's Gary's own stupidity for just showing up without a game to play. He's not exactly joe schmoe...anyway taking it down should have went to Bloomington but I am beat. Illinois is much more fun than Iowa, at least on a Monday!

Nice post mikey. The part of the two D players is more telling then anything else in your post. I too watched them, new sticks in tow, and despite them getting in phil and pet's way, they probably had more fun in two hours then any of us had all weekend. The looks and despair on Josh johnson and barracks face at the end of Sunday night is all anyone, remotely serious about themselves or pool would need to know regarding how serious to take this game. I know you love action like no one, but this weekend and the two D players should tell ya, firstly, to enjoy the game. Any action happened upon is a bonus. Not that you care but that's my mindset. It's funner, spontaneous, and a whole lot less stress. Iv'e been gambling everything for thirty years, big and small. It inevitably runs smoother, funner and even more profitable to take it as it comes. IMO

I would like to read about anyone's thoughts on how this last weekend went in your opinions. Speak up guys! Good or bad, it couldn't hurt. I know there is a small chance that anyone will care about what is said on this forum, but ideas on how to make things better, or keep them as they are, are never frowned upon!! As you all know, I am not one to hold back from saying what's on my mind...I don't think anyone else should hold back either!

I think one of the goals of this thread should be to try in any way possible to better our pool scene, and the things that go on in it. Everyone that plays pool in DSM should give ideas on how to improve the events in our pool community! We all have an opinion, so let's hear it!

Things I liked about the tournament this weekend:

1. It was 8-ball.
2. It was alternate break.
3. The entry was fairly cheap for a big added money tournament.
4. It was live streamed.
5. The handicapping gave more people a chance.

Things I disliked:

1. The live stream ended early because all of the big names were beat out.
2. People got moved up in handicap in the middle of a match.
3. Not having a 128 man bracket.
4. Pedro leaving early. (Maybe all matches should be played out, especially with a stream there)
