is it bad to have the balls touch when polishing? What happens?

When balls are touching its a little gay!

Sorry for the slow reply, I missed the bump yesterday. I just bought cheap commercial grade carpet from Home depot. Stiff enough to keep its shape, but soft enough to not damage the balls.

Maybe I'm confused. I thought you had said earlier that this was the material that Diamond used in it's ball polisher, so I figured it was some material other than carpet. So are you saying that Diamond really just uses cheap carpet in their machines?

sorry for the super slow response, finally measured the strips, they are 7.75 inches each.
