Upgrading a pool table

Would upgrading a baseline model pool table be worth it? Here's the situation. I can't scrape up enough money to get the pool table I want. I can get a lower end one. So, let's say I got a Bwick Contender (Allenton, Black wolf, etc). Would it be worth it to upgrade to 1" slate, Super speeds, worsted cloth? Or would there be no benefit to doing so?

Find a used brunswick home table on craigslist, or used somewhere, and then get a GOOD mechanic to give the table a once over. A good quality home style table can get the rails modified to the same dimensions as Gold Crown rails. Add some new Simonis cloth and some rubber, tightened pockets, and you will be on the right track. Personally I think the upgrade between 7/8" slate and 1" slate is a waste of money.

There are soooo many good deals out there on used tables now, it is almost wastefull to not take advantage of theml. What area are you in? I am sure one of us mechanics is close.

Just my $0.02 Good luck.

You need a solid frame most home tables are plywood turned on edge then clamped together by nut and bolt frame can twist and slide up and down. Take the gold crown frame solid 5/8' dowels and 8" bolts to hold it solid less movement more rigid better action off the rail.

Stock frame for a car versus a TCI box frame there a reason one is $10,000 frame wont twist with an elephant motor on it floored.

do a search on ebay by nearest to you, may need to drive a little but its worth it.

save your pennies

My advice to you would be to save a little bit longer and get the table you want. If thats not a possibilty the upgrade would make the table play alot better. Good luck:eek: One inch slate is a must!!

Where you located? I am sure there is something within reason close to you that would be a quality table that wouldn't need upgraded. Patience.
