Upgrading a toy

Just curious to know how good a toy table could play.

I'm talking about the tables that use slatron with terrible felt and rails. (Mizerak, cooper etc.

I just want to know if putting actual rails and actual cloth would do anything to make it somewhat playable?

Is the lack of slate a deal breaker?

Am I missing any other factors as to why it wouldnt work?
 
I think you touched on the major issue, failing to fully address it: structural integrity.

that said, muscle memory is HugE for pool. Shooting balls in pockets is shooting balls in pockets is shooting balls in pockets and any pool is better than no pool.

Now: why would you go with a non-slate table?
 
When I was 12 or so my cousin gave me a toy table. It was maybe 2’ wide by 4’ long. I think the balls were smaller too. I reinforced all the legs with 3/4” pine to reduce the amount of table wobble when breathing on it. It was fun for me at that age. The way I’d play was throw all the balls on the table, and count how many misses I had before all 15 fell. The rest is history:)
 
The stiffness of the structure would make any rails not very good. the cloth would at least make the cue ball travel correctly with english on cut shots, etc.

Dont have the space really, and can't fit a table down my stairs by myself. Also dont really have the money atm.

That being said, because of quarantine, I was thinking a toy table with a ball return system would be more useful than nothing.

Something that I could push up against the walls, and just practice my preshot routine and stroke mechanics and pocketing.

Essentially something better than a computer desk and a coke bottle.

I was hoping rails and cloth would make the table playable enough for me to play a proper game.

Also the nonslate table is appealing because I could pick it up and transport it myself without any help (quarantine), as well as moving it around my room depending on what I want to work on. (Limited space).

Yes, but that "slatron" is probably high density fiber board that you should seal several times and sand. The only thing special about slate is that it's extremely cheap for the desired dimensions, has high density and has little weathering. Diamond or Granite would be better but the cost! Lead would be better but the weight! Slate has no magical powers, it's just cheap.
