You could have over packed it in a hundred pounds of bubble wrap and triple boxed it and they would have not paid. Standard reason given for refusal to pay for damage "packed improperly". They NEVER Pay, unless you have UPS pack it. Then expect to pay through the nose for the services, if you can find it. I stopped using UPS.
Use USPS priority mail, insured or if it's really valuable send it Registered-insured. It cost more, and is a bit slower but has to be signed for all along the way and locked up when not in transit. I've shipped very expensive items this way. Never had a problem.

You are right. I worked there for 7 years. I recently sold a nice pool table light and it was too big for the post office...so I had to use UPS. I packed it well, but naturally they destoryed it. I took it down there and they of course blamed my packing job. I said it looks like it was ran over by a skid loader, how could any packing job save it? They didn't care. I won't use them again. They will only pay if they packed it at one of the UPS stores.

Matt, I have a new unchalked James White cue, tulip wood / ebony, with a 3/8-10 ivory joint, leather, and if you are interested, maybe we could make deal. I have it stored in a vault in a nice 1 x 2 Thomas case, and it's not going anywhere.

Since I got into all of this cue buying & trading, USPS priority mail seems to be the best. I have also used a lot of Fed-ex with no problem. The overall the consensus seems to be that the USPS is the best. I agree, but they are tough on claims. They got hung up on the "proof of value" with my claim, so I portrayed an AZ member I know as a so-called expert, and included a copy of an email from him with the third round of paperwork, and they finally paid it. The key was getting past the local people, they seem to take it personally.

I have dealt with claims quite a bit, if you need any help let me know. It will be interesting to see if they find it. They probably won't start looking for the cue until the claim is filed.
