US Amatuer - Who's in ? and this policy blows

Who's competing in the US amatuer this year?

I have a serious bone to pick but I'm holding my breath that things work out..

I got my entry in on time but got a call from them saying the venue here (tampa) for the prelim's is overbooked. They apologized and offered to put me on a waiting list in case of a cancelation...

What doesn't make sense to me is they don't have match day alternates... I asked if I had to hope someone cancelled or if I would show up at the venue and if someone else didn't show, I would get the spot. Essentially be an alternate (this is assuming there is a very high % chance at least a few people don't show for whatever reason... )

I was told that if someone doesn't show that they are not out, that it's double elimination so technically the person has to 'no show' for each of the first 2 matches they were scheduled for... and subsequently 'voiding' that spot in the bracket all together.

This doesn't make sense to me.

I would think they would forfeit the position to someone who was interested and did show.

I would think forfiets via no show compromises the integrity of the tournament by giving at least one but potentially two people (per no show) they were scheduled to play a forfeit (bye) there are other people like myself that had an entry in, post marked and paid on time that would commit.

Well, Im still keeping my hopes up and running on the assumption that I will get a chance to play.

this is the dumbest event in the u.s. and they make so much cash and give back peanuts on it.

I believe, if you are willing to travel, they will let you go to another venue that is not full - maybe. Call them and see.

I played in one "way out of town" once because I was going to be in that city for vacation at the time anyway. I did initially "sign up" for that city though.

if not, then consider yourself screwed over :(

They have reasons for doing it this way. They have been successful with this tournament for more than a few years. It would appear they know what works for them. They can't please everyone. Today they can't please you tomorrow it will be someone else. I hope you do get to play. You may be able to travel to another location to play. Good Luck.

US Amatuer

When you signed Up you were to pick a second choice on your entry if the first was full or did not have enough people . What was your second choice ??

Like another poster mentioned, what was your second choice and did you check that box.

A pre-registered tournament can't run efficiently if the organizers wait to see if a player shows up and then allow a stand by to step into that slot.

If i or you for that matter are registered for that event and can't make our first match, for whatever reason, we at least know that if we get there by the time our second one goes off we am still alive.

Players forfeit their first matches from time to time and play the next. not anything uncommon.

I am sure that your second choice is available for you. Good Luck

Yeah I realized that there was a second choice option... Can't travel. Single dad, recently divorced. Tight budget and im unwilling to leave my 4 year old. Being that prelims and finals are here in Tampa that was my one choice.

I realize some people here may think it's a joke or a money making machine for apa.. But I've never played in a tournament this size and it has nothing to do with the money... To do well would be something I would be proud of. Pretty excited at the prospect.

WOOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOT.

just got a call, they switched to a larger bracket in Tampa and I'm in.

Congrats, it is a very fun tournament to play in.

Regarding your original post, I have to agree with another poster though, people sometimes miss their first match but show up for the second; therefore, it wouldn't really be fair to them to put in an alternate in their place.

But now it doesn't matter because you are in! Congrats, again. You will have a good time.
