US Open 08/18-23

Fedor is such a student of the game, it's really hard to root against him.

I hope he makes a comeback. But we all know his pockets ain't hurting and Mr. Baoanan is hungrier.

As I type this Fedor is clutching up likes he's the one who's hungry. Man this is good pool.
That's fine, I'm rooting against him

What a day. What a night. Nailbiters and blowouts by guys playing at unreal levels.

Filler is not the best player in the world right now. It’s probably Gorst, but Aloysius Yapp arguably has a better claim. Magnificent runout, the last game by Yapp. So many tough shots.

Filler needs to get back to full time on all the big Matchroom majors. He showed nerves vs Yapp and just made too many mistakes. Yapp was steadier - something I would not have said even a year ago. Battle tested.

Gorst, what can you say? Nerves of steel and some ludicrous shotmaking.

Ko Pin Yi manhandled Shaw and Grabe. Vintage Ko.

Chua has been up and down all week. Not today. Absolutely suffocated Niels. As dominating a performance as I have seen all tournament.

Niels made two big mistakes, down 4-2 and down 7-2, by going risky offensive instead of playing safe. I know he felt he had to. The pressure of falling behind and all. He felt he needed to throw Chua off his game. I thought it was a mistake. He gave back the initiative to Chua.

Niels was great. Chua just didn’t give him much of a chance,

Oh, and Baoanan? What grit. Gotta give him props.

Yapp, Chua, Gorst, Ko - what a final four. Four of the five best players in the world? Maybe.

I can’t pick. Chua isn’t intimidated by anyone and Gorst has been falling behind. He can’t do that again. These are my two favorite active players (Niels is my alltime fav). Should be a great match.

Ko and Yapp a toss up.

Best event of the year. Could end up being the best WNT major ever in the short life of this tour.

I missed the first few racks of the Gorst/Baoanan match. I then saw the clip on FB on how Gorst complained about Baoanan supposedly soft-braking after the 4th rack...

I understand Gorst is the best player on the planet right now, but I have to say I lost some respect for him here.

Love it!!! Call it like you see it! And it adds to one of the things that has been lacking in pro pool, flare and style. Like Shaw calling out Earl or Mike the mouth talking shit!

Fedor escaped the upset axe again. He’s a great player, no doubt about it, but complaining about a “soft” break while lowkey twisting the ref’s arm to do something about it is not cool. The commentators even said Michael’s break wasn’t soft from the slow-mo replay.

In Fedor's defense, in the breaks prior to Fedor's comment, for MB's 4 breaks:

1. Zero down, zero past the headstring (unlucky on the 5 perhaps)
2. One down, zero past the headstring
3. Two down, one past the headstring (just about a legal break with 3 point rule and only because the 3 just about dropped)
4. One down, zero past the headstring

When you are 'supposed' to be doing a forceful break, those definitely weren't.

On MB's 5th break he got a warning after one down and one past.

Herein lies the problem. Whether or not a break is soft or not shouldn't be about opinion - because all referees interpret it slightly differently. Therefore the opposing player has a stone cold right to question it (and respect for the game dictates that it should be after he fact and not in the heat of the moment) - the fact that the commentators needed to verify through slo-mo replay confirms that it was contestable. The rules surrounding such an easily "ruleable" shot should be crystal clear.

The commentators were dead sure it wasn’t a soft beak, it just so happened their comments was simultaneanous with the slow-mo replay of the break, which was an added feature of the production all throughout the tournament.

My apologies, I misread it as they were checking via the slo-mo replay (I didn't watch the match). I stand by what I said though about it being subject to opinion - the rule is a poor one.
