US Open Earl Strickland Video. Who's the weirdo in the background, lol

Men in the background

The guy making the funny gestures is Pat O'Neill. The guy to his right is Ralph Rubin. Neither men are weird. I know them both.

I am confident in stating that Pat was not trying to be funny. He was trying to signal and mouth his words to someone behind the camera it seems, and probably was unaware of how he might have appeared on camera during the interview. Pat has been to every US Open for the past 18 years or so, and truly loves the game.

I have spoken to him off/on over the years and Pat would never do anything to intentionally disrupt the interview of any professional pool player.

I would bet he had no idea of how he might have appeared during his machinations.

Of course, if all of that was intentional I guess I'll be eating crow, but I am fairly confident my assessment is correct.

Towards the middle of the interview, watch the dude in the background, WTF? Thats some weird stuff on Earls fingers too, lol. Ron

He doesn't want to feel the cue??Hope he doesn't end up like Howard Hughes or in a van down by the river.

I've been with Earl in the smoking area between rounds. NOBODY has the nerve to ask him about the finger tape, pads, straps, weights, cue wraps, etc...

I was at DCC a few years ago, watched Earl play a match and then went out to smoke and talked to him for a while.

I did ask him about the weights on his arms. He was fine with talking about it and in short said he wears them because he is messed up in the head. It was one of my favorite pool memories. He said "If I didnt wear this stuff I wouldnt even be able to beat you"

We talked about a few of his gadgets, but he was very honest and basically said they were bandaids to help his play.

Im glad to see him working towards improving his game again, and hope his move to Meucci will help him along the way.

Go Earl!!!

This truly made me laugh uncontrollably for about 2 minutes. I can just hear Earl. LMAO

He's flat out serious. Now how he came to believe that would help his game, I'd imagine that's a whole different can of funky rationale.

I hope his move to the Meucci homeland near Memphis does him well! His presence in Greensboro will be missed. It just got a whole lot quieter. :frown:

I may be opening myself up for a slam fest, but the last custom I had built I asked the maker to weight the cue so it felt like nothing on my bridge hand. It was a "feeling" I was looking for that is hard to explain.

I don't see why it seems so easy for everyone to slam a guy that has won the USOpen 6 TIMES.....so he may seem out there......Earl is a legend no matter how you chop it up...

It was hilarious! He really wasnt trying to be insulting, just being Earl and saying what he was thinking. Out of all the things I saw and did while at the DCC, it is what I think of most LOL.

That would be Willem Dafoe and Larry David in the background :/

I was thinking the same thing. I checked with my sources in MD and I found out that a pic was taken of the very same guy outside of the venue just before he was escorted away.

btw, no harm intended. Just bust'n balls.

That was one great interview by Jimmy Wych! He somehow made Earl feel comfortable enough to be very revealing about himself and his "equipment."
Not always an easy thing to do. Good job Jimmy!

That's what I was thinking also Jay.
Earl seemed to be in a good mood. I enjoyed listening to the interview.
I stopped watching it because the mime behind the Pearl was distracting me!
I'm going to watch it again but 1st, I'm going to cut out a little piece of paper just big enough to cover them two dudes and when it starts, I'll quickly tape the paper over their mugs and really settle in for some Earlisms.

Oh yea....Go Earl!!!! :)

I wasn't trying to slam him, I hope my written words didn't come off that way. He's one of the most difficult, incredible talents for me to understand at times. It's a true treat to watch him at his best and be privy to some incredible insight. He's an enigma.. a conundrum.. and a genius!!

That explains his move to meucci, he doesn't like the feel of a cue in his hands.

That guy was heckling Earl during the match...

I was hoping to see somebody grab him by the shirt and lead him away.

The guy isn't a youngster by any means....(except IQ wise)

It takes all kinds.....

Nope, that wasn't the 'heckling' guy. The 'heckling' guy looked maybe about 35, wasn't heckling anybody, was another row up and a few seats farther to the left of Earl, and looked surprised as heck to be singled out by Earl, after Earl missed a shot. He looked like an Earl fan, had the shirt.

After Earl singled him out, and a drunk Earl supporter started calling for 'Security' to remover the 'heckler', everyone I could see in the stands was obviously asking the guy next to them, "WTF was THAT all about? I didn't hear nothing."

In an earlier match, I witnessed Earl complain about another fan, who was saying something to his wife. Apparently it pissed Earl off bigtime.
The guy profusely apologized, said he only came all the way to this tourney to see Earl, etc. His wife exclaimed, "He's your biggest Fan!"
Made no difference. He was on Earl's shit list for the rest of the match, with glares for every missed shot. Felt sorry for the guy.

Which is why I just quietly took a few pics of him then, and in the smoking area later, rather than risk talking to the guy. As my wife said to me int he smoking area, "Don't make eye contact"

Just FYI, I'm not an Earl basher. I like watching him play. I was sad to see him go. I am also an amateur golfer, and have lots of 'goofy' legal add-ons to my equipment that work for me. Specific tapes, weights, braces make sense to me.

Without any good reason, Earl always seems to pick someone out of the crowd to blame for his mistakes. My wife has been on the receiving end of this situation and it is not fun. Earl may be the best 9-ball player to ever play the game, but he definitely has some mental demons. He should get some professional help and take some meds.
