US Open Player Number Was Down

I missed some of my favorite players this year at the US Open. I read where Reyes and Bustamante were given awards by there government and that explained what happened to them, but there were other top players who usually come to the Open and they were absent. I missed seeing Keith McCready, Souquet, & Hohman among others this year and I was wondering if anyone could give a little information about why some of the usual players didn't show up.

Thorsten, Ralf, Orcullo and Neils played in the World Pool League going on at the same time due to the schedule change of the Open due to the IPT Reno event. It's closer to home and/or they were probably given show-up money.

Keith I heard, and this does not have to be accurate, just was getting back from Reno and was too pooped to play. Maybe he drove and had a few stops along the way that messed up his timing.

Thanks for the information. I'd heard something about the scheduling conflict and I think it isn't right for the IPT to just ignore the longest running 9 ball tournament like they did when they scheduled their Reno tournament. Barry Berhman didn't have much choice when he learned about the IPT schedule conflicting with the US Open. He had to reschedule his tournament and that's what happened to some of the players like Thorsten, Ralf, Orcullo, and Neils since they'd committed ahead of time to the WPL tournament before the US Open was rescheduled.

Well, when you are promised money, you may be a little more free with the money you have. I also love the conflict of scheduling of these tournaments. Who wants to see all the top players in one tournament?

Yeah - i know one female player who paid out on a bunch of bills she didnt have to, just before going to Reno "knowing" she would have at least that $5k at the end of the week. She said she was gonna be in a little bind waiting a week for the check. By now she needs a loan Im sure.

A lot of pool players financial situation can change in a matter of minutes depending on whether they gamble, how they manage their money, etc. I'm sure they did the same thing they've always done... played a tournament, won some money and paid for the next tournament.

Players don't just hope to win a little money for fun stuff. They hope to win money in order to pay the bills. Those bills include hundreds in entry fee's, hotel, food, & travel expense along with regular bills like the rest of us have. If these guys were relying on their IPT checks to fund them for the Open, as some were, of course they're not going to have to money to afford it if they didn't get the check.

This yr is different than yrs past... yrs past they made other arrangements, played in local/regional events, or whatever the case might be in order to have gotten there. This yr, they earmarked their "guaranteed IPT money" for the event. Some had other means of getting there and some did not. I know of three that did not and as someone else said, the number is probably higher.

That's too bad. I'm sure KT would loan her money for a little fee. I wouldn't put it past him.

The IPT is trying to lock players into an exclusivity contract and basically wants to be the belle of the dance. If they make all the other tours pack up their tents and go home, that means more big names for them. Nothing is ever an accident and it's hard to ignore the longest running 9 ball event.

One can't ignore the fact that the US Open did not promote its 2006 event as well as the 2005 one. You will recall the large number of qulaifiers seen in 2005, I heard of very few in 2k6.

You stated what I was thinking in the back of my mind. I agree with you that it was no accident that they scheduled one of their biggest paying tournaments the same week as the US Open. They would like to be the only game in town i'm sure.

Another theory I have is that the IPT intentionally withheld payment for the Reno event so that a lot of players would have a hard time getting to and paying their way into the US Open, but that's another can of worms.
