USA in London for The Mosconi Cup

Jalapus, all pro players on AZB are marked and identified by a black status bar that say Pro Player (under their gold/silver/bronze one).

This can't possibly be true, I just looked under my name and found no black status bar like you say.

Talent is one thing, TEAM is the other. This was illustrated yesterday in a college football game that was important only to the participants. The University of Oregon Ducks had all the highly recruited talent, yet throughout the year they never were really a team. The Ducks have the fanciest uniforms, the best training facilities, all the goodies that rich alumni Phil Knight (Nike) could buy. Just two years ago they played in the national championship game.

The Oregon State Beavers were composed of lower tier recruits, JC transfers, and walk-ons. But they jelled together as a team. I believe these kids would walk through machine gun fire if their coach asked them to.

Both schools had terrible win-loss records this year. The State "civil war" was to determine who ended up in last place of the PAC 12 North conference.

The Ducks talent showed...many great passing plays. At one point in the 3rd quarter they held a sizeable lead.

Then the Beavers TEAM began to play their hearts out. They went into old fashioned smash mouth running game football. Everybody on the field, on the sidelines, an in the stands knew what was going to happen on every Beavers play.
It was if the Beavers announced; "We're going to run right through here. Try to stop it."

The Ducks couldn't stop it. The final score was 34-24, Beavers. Their first victory over the Ducks in 9 years.

So, who is going to win the Mosconi cup? I think the TEAM will win. It's up to the players...

Very-

Very well put.

As theoretically reasonable as your post was, I don't think it will come down to team. A year ago, Team USA was a solid 4-4 in team matches but lost the 2015 Mosconi Cup by going a pitiful 3-7 in singles.

How Team USA players perform when they are alone on the field of battle will decide the 2016 Mosconi. It is when they are alone on the field of battle that the pressure is turned up the highest, and at the Mosconi this is the pressure that Team USA hasn't handled well in this decade. If we win just three singles matches this year, the Mosconi is already lost.

The Mosconi must not be confused for a pro sports team, where players spend moths at a time together. The Mosconi is an impromptu gathering of talent. That talent meshed well a year ago in team matches, but our players have not made the grade when they perform alone. Singles is more about pedigree and less about teamwork.

None of the ten Mosconi players will be short of motivation. Net of expense, they probably average about $50,000 income a year. A chance to add $20,000 to their bottom lines will be huge motivation for most of them. Anyone who think the Mosconi is about pride rather than money is missing the boat. In pool, a $20,000 payday is huge.

Thank you KY Boy

I happen to be very optimistic about this year. I think Mark is a great coach and tend to think he has experience on his side this year as do a couple of the players.

I feel we will be better prepared to see the closest MC score yet. Maybe even a win in the cards finally. Either way, it's gonna be fun to watch as always.

Mosconi Cup Team

We have the talent necessary to match up with the Europeans. What's lacking is something else which I prefer not to comment on here. I do hope to rectify that problem one day though.

Are you referring to Earl Strickland? If so, remember that he cursed at a female referee blames almost everything on his misses, lost his Cuetec sponsor after blaming their cue for his poor performance, and needs to attend anger management sessions. Because of these, he has hurt pool and should not be able to represent Team USA until he changes his attitude, which will most likely never happen.

If you are referring to Oscar Dominguez not making the Mosconi Cup Team cut, I agree. Oscar would have been a better team captain choice than Justin Bergman. Not only did Oscar have more points, he is a better all around player period.

Just my 2 cents.

Just to set the record straight, Earl was jabbering away during a match in the WPC in Cardiff and Michaela Tabb asked him to quiet down multiple times and finally Earl said "No, you shut up." He didnt curse but he was still being a big asshole. The next day when he came into the arena for his match, he had a bouquet of flowers which he handed to Michaela. He may have verbally apologized somewhat but im not sure-It's been a while-was probably 2003 or so.

I would VERY much doubt that is what Jay was referring to.

How can you think that Oscar is a "better all around player" when Justin just crushed him playing 10 ball for big money..... and I think that Justin would be clearly favored in one pocket... and probably in 8 ball?

Mosconi Cup 9-BALL

You clearly don't know the difference between a money player and a tournament player. Also, when did the Mosconi Cup starting playing One-Pocket, 10-Ball, and 8-Ball?

When they start offering points for money games, please let me know.

Two responses:

1. I mentioned multiple games because you claimed that Oscar was a better "all around" player.... I was guessing you meant "all around" in the sense of multiple games. Maybe I misread your comment.

2. Go and ask any top pro in the United States if they would rather see Oscar or Justin's name as their next match in a TOURNAMENT and you will figure out who knows the difference between a money player and a tournament player. There is a VERY short list of people that really follow pool who think that Oscar is a better player/pick than Justin in a gambling or tournament format... To be clear... I think Oscar is an awesome person, player, professional, etc... He just doesn't play as good as Justin.

I'll take a guess that Jay thinks he would be a better captain for Team USA then Mark Wilson. I think Mark is doing the best with the hand he is given. He has put on a tremendous event at Ballpark Village the past two years to help pump up the USA team. ALL of them say it was an event like no other they have been involved in. Unfortunately the team building is constantly hindered and I don't think with the current lineup that will ever be moved forward.

Lol.

Yeah, you're right. They just play a form of 9ball(9 on spot) that ONLY the f^*%^&g Euros ever play. Then we send over players that spend 3/4 of the year playing on a bar-box. What really surprises me is that the matches are even half-way close.

I hope I don't rub folks the wrong way regarding my opinion on the question posed, but here we go.

I can understand why folks can spend the time and money to travel to London to support the USA team. In the unlikely event that the USA team happens to win, being there is something that you will treasure forever. Plus I have believe that if you decide to attend, pool is a significant priority in your life.

But think about it - is your moral support for the USA team really going to make even a modicum of difference, when you consider how big a longshot this team will be and combine that with the environment that the competition will be played in? No. Let me say this again, No.

But what if the ones who decided to make the trip maybe next time re-direct their allocated time and monies into help sponsoring an existing professional tournament here in the America? Maybe take some of the 5K+ you're going to need to attend the Mosconi Cup and instead help grow an existing tournament to better help put an event on the map. I don't need to harp on what peanuts the greatest pool players play for in tournament play. But the only thing that is going to make today's world and media wake up to the kind of talent in this game is to generate a buzz about a tournament. And the best way to generate that buzz is the purse. Look at who traveled to Kuwait (of all places) to play in a first time event with a purse of 275K - virtually every world class player.

I recently attended the American 14.1 tournament in Midlothian VA. I was also a sponsor of the event because playing straight pool is an everyday passion in my life. The 4 days I was there witnessing some of the greatest straight pool players in the world compete for only 40K was one of the most gratifying sporting events I've seen in my 60+ years of being involved in sports. My contribution was the least I could do to help pay back the for enjoyment of watching these professionals compete. I left with the feeling that I want to do more to help to advance this tournament, and hopefully the sport overall. FYI - 25 of the 42 players who participated in Midlothian are competing in Kuwait.

So if you're going to London, have a great time and I hope whatever you anticipate happens. But give this a thought - think about reaching out to an existing tournament director on how you can help to advance whatever kind of tournament they are producing. I guarantee you none of them will turn their back on whatever support you offer, and you'll feel damm good about what you did, especially if you attend the event.

After all, you're just another pool nut, but one who can help make a difference.
You know there is more in London to do other then watch the Mosconi Cup...

Americans being the favorite or not, I wish I was going.

I have seen them ( and almost everybody else since the 1990's) both play and prefer Oscar's game period. I don't care what others think, because after playing for over 25 years I have seen players come and go and have been right most of the time.
