USA MC Captain

I'd love the opportunity. I have a plan already in place on how I would prepare our players. It would be a year long process to become a team member. The last month would be like a training camp where we would fine tune our team. I will guarantee one thing. We will come prepared for battle!

Jay you're not just enthusiasm, you're substance!

I love and appreciate you and am glad you've put it out there! :smiling-heart:

How about a celebrity with a passion for pool? Someone to help grow the fan base. Imagine the ROCK as Captain or another large personality. Just saying. We don't need someone only pool players have heard of. We need someone that would draw fans that would otherwise never cared about pool.

**US Citizenship should never matter, only that they can win. That's what's important. If there is a Canadian, Mexican or Phillipino that can get us to victory, why stand in their way based on some "American Sentiment". US Gymnastists did pretty well under a foreigner, and US dominated for decades.

**Should not matter if they are "pro" or not. We need the best person for the job. Some of the BEST college coaches, professional coaches and Olympic coaches were never "pro" anything, other than champion coaches.

**The best team sports coaches in all of sports are NOT currently competing. College football coaches are paid a million dollars per year, some are $7M per year, they could not outrun a pool player ;)

**Yes, the requirement for any good coach is respected and fierce competitor. Respected or not, not so sure, but winning has a way of changing "respect"

So, there should be NO requirements, and just hire the best man/woman for the job. plain and simple.

Not everyone is going to love any choice that is made, but if we win, that will ease most folks discomfort with the choice :grin-square:

Firstly let me state I am from the UK.
But I still have an opinion, and I want to see a close real contest each year.

IMO players should only be eligible to play if they have played in a certain number of 'world events' outside of the USA.
IMO you Americans play a slightly different style pool...your game is faster, looser, more flamboyant.
IMO your basics/fundamentals need to tighten up/improve. And when playing safeties etc, you need better decisions and more exact execution.
IMO you play the game/shots as if it is a matter of inches......your overseas opponents are playing the game/shots as if it were a matter of millimeters.

Your new Captain needs to sort these issues (plus a couple of others) starting NOW with a group of 10 potential team members.

Who should your new Captain be.........no idea!

It's the US team. He needs to be American. We are quite jingoistic when it come to stuff like that :-)

Lou Figueroa

No, we are not. Otherwise we have a LOT of GOLD medals we have to give back form the Olympics. The players have to be citizens, NOT the coach.

How about Mike Zuglan, he seems to be an "in charge" type person and he was a good pro player.

I am in agreement with the bold.

Whoever the American capt'n is : He will need to be a combination of Patton and Joda / in other words: Flamboyant AND wise where the word "no" is not in the vocabulary.

was Johan Ruijsink a pro level player before taking over as captain and guiding team euro to prominence?

I feel there's a difference between what works for the Euros and the Americans. It's like Nutella instead of jam :-)

I think Jay has the right idea. The players need lots of training, not a cheerleader.

Hopefully the training will include much tighter play, full of safties, and to learn when to go offensive only when they are sure to get out.

_______

The coach whomever, will get a month to conduct training, not a year.

Clueless as usual Lou. I would be in constant touch ALL YEAR with a group of our top players, encouraging them to play all the majors (with support if needed) and engage them with me in a year long process to recapture the Mosconi Cup! I've outlined other steps I would take on another thread which I'm sure you read Lou.

I have a plan how to win this thing and I won't let knockers stop me. I don't care if you personally don't like me either. No skin off my back.

oh, so now you're just "in touch" with the players, "encouraging them" for a year, lol.

And here's the thing, Jay: the only one making it personal is you.

If you're going to throw your hat into the ring you should be prepared to accept that not everyone is going to believe you are the best choice and maybe, ohmygosh, prefer another choice. Displaying such thin skin, calling me a "knocker," only shows why you should not be chosen to lead the US MC team.

As far out of left field as this suggestion is, it is not maybe so bad. Better a rock star than someone calling the players all year to "encourage them."

I'm thinking School of Rock :-)
