I am starting a new thread on the subject of what some refer to as The Orphan’s and Widow’s Fund and the monies there-in.
HISTORICAL FACT: This fund would not exist unless Jerry Karsh had not appointed me to head a USBA Committee on Jr Billiards, but he did and monies in the fund were personally collect by me from many donors with the understanding that these monies would be used for certain purposes AND FOR CERTAIN PURPOSES ONLY.
HISTROICAL FACT: in asking for donations for the juniors some people did not want to give to the juniors but indicated that they would give money for Women’s Billiard Program and thus Jerry decided to rename the committee I chaired The Women’s and Junior’s Competition Committee [or something like that]. AND THUS THE FUNDS BEGAN TO BE CO-MINGLED, against my advice I might add, I WANTED TWO FUNDS, but Jerry and later Bob vetoed that, something about: “The Sec/Treas is to busy as it is….one fund might even be too much for him to handle”. And that has proved to be the case.
HISTORICAL FACT: I have an accounting of all monies donated, from whom, and what they were spent on. The Current S/T of the USBA should have those figures in his records as these monies were routed through that office with the previous S/T’s cutting me a check whenever I needed an invoice paid. If those records cannot be found it is an organizational failure and not my own. Quick and dirty, naming no names nor amounts, here is an accounting of all funds:
INCOME FROM DONATIONS EXPENSES
$1500 Jr. USBA Nationals, Detroit, 2003 $1800
$6000 Jr. USBA Nationals, Detroit, 2005 $1200
$0000 Jr. USBA Nationals, NYC, 2007 $2000
$6500 USBA Women’s, Louisville, 2008 $7000
======================= ============
$14500 $12000
============
SURPLUS $2500
The $2500 surplus in the fund, based on the wishes of the donors, should be applied to Jr. Billiards only, and only Jr. Billiards as you can see by the above figures. There is no money in the fund for Women’s Billiards as some seem to think.
INCOME FROM DONATIONS: Many donated a few a lot most a little but in the end it got the job done….and everybody who did donate requested anonymity.
EXPENSES: For the Jrs money was spent for commemorative shirts for the players, EVERYBODY got a neat glass paperweight trophy, some per diem money and a banquet [a la SANG LEE] after the event. NO PRIZE MONEY was ever paid to a junior as that was The UMB’s [AND MY!!!] mandate. During these years we sent two different Jr Champions and one Woman’s Champion to represent America in worlds play AND PAID FOR ALL OF THEIR EXPENSES to do so. As you can see from the above balance sheet the Women’s event cost more than we had in donations, which I made up from out of my own pocket.
HISTORICAL FACT: one of my plans as president of The USBA was to have not just one committee and just not one fund, but two of each. The former was easy, one of my first acts as president was to appoint Bob Byrne as The Chair of The Women’s Competition Committee and Felipe Razon as The Chair of The Jr. Competition Committee. They both accepted and what they have done since I do not know.
